The Jets also made their initial plunge into the free-agent market, signing former Cowboys defensive end Kenyon Coleman for a surprisingly hefty amount. Coleman got a five-year, $20 million contract, including more than $6 million guaranteed, a source said. Evidently, they see big things for Coleman, a career backup.

I had a thought that coleman really impressed some people late in the season last year. this seems to prove it. Very good depth and a decent starter, and maybe a little more.

Good for him. From what I saw from him, he is a middle of the road type player with the ability for more. He has pass rush and run stopping ability. I hope he pans out for the Jets. Living in NYC area, I like what the Jets are doing. I keep an eye on them as the local team even though I'm an AFC hater. :p:

Well, I was a little upset at losing the guy... but I would have been quite upset if Jerry had committed that kind of money to him, so I reckon I'm OK now...

Still would have liked for it to work out that he could have remained with the Boys, but life is full of small disappointments...

He just might be worth it...things seemed to happen when he was on the field as opposed to Canty and Spears.

I would think that Dallas will be drafting another DE next month.

I don't think Coleman is as good a 3-4 DE if they aren't playing as much 2-gap. He doesn't have the athletic ability to play 1-gap.

This is precisely what I expected to happen... OK, me and most of the real "experts", but my opinion was arrived at by employing the basics of my college Economics class, the part about supply and demand...

When you have a low supply (in this case, a very weak class of free agents) combined with a large demand (lots of NFL teams with lots of cap room), the end result is that the price of the commodity goes sky high...

But I have to admit, even I didn't anticipate 7 million a year deals for guards who have never even been to a single Pro Bowl... or 3 million a year for a blocking fullback... or 5 million a year for a blocking tight end... or-- well, you get the idea...

In this market, financial restraint is a must... if the Boys don't do too much more in the free agent market (after re-signing Colombo, LOL), it's no big deal... they can use the remaining cap room to extend Romo and/or Newman, and put a chunk of it into LTBE incentives in a few contracts, so as to push that cap room into next year's salary cap...

The fan in me hopes for another move or two, but I could see the wisdom in not being a big player in this market, this year...

I agree. I think this guy has the tools, he just needs more time to develop. I suspect he won't be a probowl player, but will be a solid addition to the Jets. Greg Ellis type player. Good, but not a probowler.

A goofy amount of money to spend.
Think about it this way.

The cap hit of Coleman's contract averages out to $4 million per year, but is probably much lower than that in the first 3 years.

In 2007 the cap is $109 million for 51 players. Let's assume that the non-starting players have an average cap hit of $1 million per player. That means that non-starters take up only $29 million of the $109 million cap. Thus, $80 million is available for the 22 starters on offense and defense. That means your starters can have an average cap hit of about $3.6 million per year.

When you think about it that way, if the Jets expect Coleman to be a starter, and they probably do, then Coleman's cap hit is about the average for a starter. Actually, it's probably much less than average in the initial years, and will continue to be less in the later years, because by year 3-5 of his contract, the cap will have increased significantly (thus increasing average pay for starters).

I have to agree with you, $4 mil a year for a guy who's been around that you think can start (and I do) and might not ever be dominant but will be reliable is not a bad deal.

Coleman is going to a team with a similar defensive strategy - Magini is like BP's great grandson coaching tree-wise. Also, players who Bill clearly valued -- like Coleman who was here for several years -- are always evaluated well by other teams. There is a considerable respect paid to players and coaches who worked with Parcells.
