JG - Great call

I really like Jason Garrett, he brings a lot of really great qualities to this Organization and Team. Things we have not seen in Dallas in a long time.

BUT, at times he can drive me crazy with some of his play calling in short yardage situations, just not enough commitment to the run, and I dont like when we play cute, like the Austin run and double reverse etc.. just dont like that stuff when you are better than the other team.

I must give JG credit though. That play action pass to Holley to win the game was just a great play call. Awesome. Even though we where not running the ball great it still worked. He got in the right formation for the 49ers to think run, they bit big time and GAME OVER. It was a very good job by the O-line and Romo to sell it, great execution, but got to give JG a lot of credit there.:starspin

He didn't call that play. Romo did.

It was one of two plays Romo could use at the line based on what he sees in the defense.

That's typical coming out of stoppages, when you have time to set it up.

Did you read/hear that from somewhere or just speculation? According to Holley, Romo change the play from what was called from JG.

They're always great when they work, and bad when they don't.

The announcers were critical of the double reverse call, but I thought it was the right time to run that play. First and 10 just inside their territory, I expected a run blitz, too. I didn't like Austin's run, but that's an isolated bad call. It *was* refreshing to hear JG say he didn't like that call, too. And then when asked why he called it, then, he said 'sometimes you make mistakes.'

All-in-all, though, JG is a good play caller. I don't think people who criticize him really know what they're talking about. What they're really saying is they want us to be a power running team; we're not. We don't have the personnel to pull it off, and trying to do so would be an example of bad play calling. You call plays your personnel is able to execute well, period.

That's what I understood also. Romo noticed the safeties coming up to the line to defend Holley on previous plays when he was cutting across, and he told Holley to run the same pattern , but to break downfield instead.

The only two play calls I didnt like were the pitch to Miles in the 4th quarter and the double reverse. Our offense is good enough that it doesnt need these type of gadget plays and recent history has shown us that most of them have done nothing but kill drives. They are moving the ball pretty well, why kill the momentum.

This is a pretty accurate post and fair. I think there are some examples of questionable calls from JG though. I'm not a fan of the reverse at times like when we ran it. He's done this a few times when we are flat out better than the defense and moving the ball well, then he tries to get cute and it gets stopped.

He's great overall and I'm sure not screaming for his head. It is fair to call him on trying to get a little too clever at times when it's not needed though, imo.

I let Jerry know we should keep him anyway.

Sorry dude, it was an audible called at the line by Romo.

I wouldn't mind seeing a flea flicker at some point since Garrett can't help but throw in a trick play now and again.

There is a time and a place for every play.

So far have we had a trick play work? It seems as though we lose yards or it is always negative.

Just stick to what we do best and don't try to get cute.

:)

In fairness, Landry ran his "exotics" too.

I was impressed that Garrett kicked the OT field goal immediately, on first down. It was a no-nonsense conservative call.

I'm with you. In that same press conference, Jason said he makes about 10 calls/game that even he doesn't like. Fans see that too, and that's part of why they're critical.

But that's not unique in a play caller. They all make mistakes. And they all are in situations where DCs make great calls, too. On the whole, though, JG has grown into a good play caller, and the mistakes he does make, by and large, aren't the calls people point to when they question his abilities. There's more to it than 'he should have called a run, instead' when the goal line pass doesn't work.

I've also read/heard Holley said Romo changed the play when he saw the safeties set up to anticipate short throw to Holley. Change in play call was not rpt not one of the options Garrett gave Romo. It's particularly funny when Billick (in TV booth) was heard saying something like should be a run ... MYGOODNESS.

JG's play calling is probably his biggest weakness.....how many times have you guys said during a game...What the???????????? exactly....coach JG and give
some one else the play calling duties....

I thought it was that he changed the route, rather than necessarily changing the call. That was a perfect time for play-action.

That play will work if you are going against a defense that has slow LBs. The double reverse takes so much time to develop that if the opposing defense has LB who can cover alot of ground, you will not gain much yardage.

That play would work great against our defense with Brooking and Brady but agains Willis and company, not so much.

This is a problem I have with JG's calls. He doesn't have good feel for the game situation. Those sweeps to Barber when he was gimpy used to drive me nuts.

LBs can be fast and not maintain their backside run responsibilities. It's a great way of slowing down an aggressive team. And where we were on the field and the down and distance were perfect for a call like that. I don't have any problem with it. It just didn't work. Good defense by SF.
