1992 NFC Championship Game - Jimmy calls for a run on 4th and 1. It fails.
Jimmy went on to lead the team to a championship that year. You heard little from the press about the call after they beat the hated 49ers. But at the time of the call, it changed the momentum slightly in favor of the
other team.
1995 NFC East Game - Fourth Quarter at The Vet. Very windy that day. Dallas has a 4th and 1. Punt it into the wind, or go for it? The game is tied 17-17. You make the first and that game is essentially over and Dallas wins. Dallas had lost the week before to the Commanders, a six game winner that season. The Eagles ended up with ten wins and made the play-offs.
Barry calls for the 4th and 1 with Emmitt running the ball. It fails. There was an issue, which may have been a called time out, but the play was set up again. Barry calls for the same play to be run.
It fails. The Eagles move the ball and kick the winning field goal.
Dallas beats the snot out of the Eagles 30-11 in the divisional play-off game and then wins the Super Bowl.
2021 NFL League Interplay Game - Opening drive for the Cowboys. Dallas has a 4th and 1 on the 32 yard line. Big Mike calls for a run by Zeke. There were comments that if Zeke had run straight instead of veering off it would have been a first down. But Zeke was stopped short.
Dallas went on the win the game in OT. The ending of the season is yet unknown.
Jimmy struggled with clock management his first two years. That was one of my biggest disappointments with Jimmy. I felt he would be a difference maker, but he struggled with giving the ball back with too much time, and burning his time outs before the end of the game.
Barry ate hot dogs on the sidelines. One defense of Barry is he told the team after the 4th and 1 in the locker room that he believed in the team so much he was certain they could get that yard.
Last season was a no win situation for Big Mike. No off season. No real training camp. Losing his starting QB, and errors on the team that looked like they were never ready to play. Looks like there was no real bonding time between head coach and players.
But to judge that as the norm and this season as the aberrant ignores Big Mike is leading the most balanced team in the league. He has established an esprit de corps which galvanizes this team. A brotherhood which has not shown uop around here since perhaps Jimmy's teams.
The talking heads need content and controversy. They love the idea of Big Mike scuttling a great season by a poor decision. And yet the players love this guy and are going full tilt for him.
Perhaps one last point. We saw Garrett be a coward in his tenure, punting the ball away and not daring. Jerry made a comment in a presser and the next game Garrett went for a fourth and one. Perhaps Jerry has talked with Big Mike about the Clapping Yellow Stain and Big Mike being aggressive.
Or he just might just believe in this team enough to think they can bully any team across from them.
Personally, I like that last part.
No one knows what this year will bring. Maybe we should trust the players and their effort in regard to Big Mike, and not a bunch of rabble rousers on TV and on this board.
