If anyone listening to Mike Fisher, he often states that the Cowboys loses to Kyle Shanahan type coaches. Coaches that line up and punch you in the mouth by run the ball down your throat and will stop you from running, making you one dimensional.

If you go back to the Jimmy Johnson halftime speech where he gets pissed off, if you were a Cowboy fan during this time frame, Jimmy built his defense on being physical..... on both sides of the ball. And to this day, I do not understand why Jerry Jones hasn't learned from this template ESPECIALLY since he has not won squat for 28 years. Only think that explains this is PRIDE.

Jerry wants war daddies to excite the crowd with sacks and turnovers. Both are necessary but more importantly, be physical which Dallas is built on finesse. On both sides of the ball. Until this franchise changes the culture, the drought will continue and season after season, Cowboys fans will be left scratching their heads in frustration while Jerry keeps selling FOOLS GOLD of hope each season.
Tolbert was 230lb coming out as a college LB, he played at around 254 much of his career. Cassillis was a 278lb nose tackle who had been a bust for the most part. Maryland was 305. Haley 252! Johnson’s philosophy was speed and more speed with depth. Part of Jerry’s failure has been he’s held onto that philosophy with tunnel vision negating his ability to look beyond that box!

True but they then doubled back and trimmed him down 30lbs. Of course he was being crapped on well before.
Yea its tough. You likely aren't getting a NT in round 1 who is great day 1.
And in reality those massive dudes can be long shot type bets as they tend to either age very, very well or flame out quick once they get paid.
Can see why Dallas avoided them early but then again the complaints about run stuffing are all very real.

Jerry has no philosophy. He’s not a coach, scout or personnel guy… Jerry is just a buffoon with money who named himself GM.

The Def. Coord. is given a lot of leeway in what type of players he wants. Jerry’s involvement is when he sees a shiny object fall into the 2nd round due to injury or off the field issues and he pounces like a fat kid finding a cookie in the corner.

Not sure it is about physicality.
49ers are a physical team but largely any team that will be patient and stick to the run game can beat us.
Shanny's running the zone blocking scheme which isn't always physical but of course is when you have a good OL.
Teams are learning that stopping the run to make teams 1 dimensional and being able to run so you aren't yourself is important again like it was for most of 1970-2005.

Analytics going into GB game said Dallas had to pass on first down because when they did they averaged insane points per drive.
So Dallas tried that and GB played pass defense on 1st down.
And couldn't run it on 2nd or 3rd down even against pass defenses.

You have to have some balance or be over the top good.

Analytics steers things 1 direction (all pass all the time, RB are worth .05 cents) but it only takes one playoff loss for fans to really hate it.

So we didn't draft a DT with our 1st round pick last year?

Just because it didn't work out doesn't mean it didn't happen.

We tried to fix the middle of the defense. Mazi was just (so far) a colossal bust.
So Trystan Hill ( DT-UCF ) not even in the NFL anymore and now Mazi ( who Dallas told him to loss 30 pounds) have been mistakes. So the person doing the shopping seems to be screwing up. But the Dallas draft has been so good lately. Another overrated statement.

The point is that they have tried to fix it, and failed.

Your OP suggests that they haven't even tried, because of "pride."

Jimmy’s defenses were built in the mold of his Miami teams. Make them faster than anyone’s seen before.

It’s not to say that they didn’t play tough but pretending Johnson just built big, physical, hulking guys isn’t accurate.

Mazi Smith didn't flop because he was only 300 lbs or 310 or whatever it was at the end of the year. If he did lose 30+ lbs, it's possible he was weakened, having a big guy do that purposely in season is impossibly foolish, if it were intentional. Regardless, Mazi flopped because, among other things, he's the slowest player off the snap in the history of football. There were instances you can slow down the video at the snap, and after every player on the field has moved....Mazi is still in his stance.

Make excuses for Mazi, Jones, whoever, there are no legit excuses. Jerry Jones & co have no idea how to construct a complete roster. 28 years makes any argument to the contrary laughable. Mazi shouldn't be expected to contribute? Fine, what about other 1 techs they've drafted and developed who can play instead of him? Exactly, there are none. Most of their DT picks have been hot garbage. Their solution to fixing DT the last few years is trade a low round pick for a Raiders castoff, a guy who was a street free agent this past offseason, no one offered him, so they picked him back up for basically the league minimum.

They don't know how to find or make tough players. The playoff record since the mid-90s can't lie, it is what it is. That won't change until the organization does.

That wasn't what made us great. Jimmy Johnson built our offense to deal with the Eagles historic defense back then. He knew if he couldn't defend against that defense he couldnt win. In building that dominant o line we dominated. If they can stop that Eagles front 4 they could stop anyone in the NFL, and he was right. That philosophy paid off with many Super Bowl victories.

I might need some help as I try to recall the names of the defensive line. Reggie White, Jerome Brown, Mike Pitts, and Clyde Simmons. Linebackers Byron Evans, Seth Joyner and Jesse Small? I think the Small that knocked out our kicker. I remember the name but can't spell it. It started with a Z. Eric Williams was the final piece. He was the most effective big monsters tackle against Reggie White. When he came into his own that's when the tides turned and we started to beat the Eagles.

Jimmy built his team with Jerry's money before the salary cap. What did he do in Miami? Lol

The implication was there.

Johnson's priority on defense was speed.

"Physical" is a nebulous term that can't be measured. Every team tries to be/build a physical roster. Johnson didn't set out to build a physical defense. He set out to build a fast defense.

Jimmy Johnson built his defense on being physical however Jerrah weakened every other Cowboys defense after because of this country club way of doing things.

Jimmy built his defense on speed, particularly the back seven. In the front four he hit home runs with Tony Tolbert late in the draft, acquiring Casillas and Haley in trades. Finding guys like Everett and Washington to play key roles. Common denominator: superior talent evaluation.
Right. Quinn also relied on speed, but our failures at filling some positions left us with holes that can be exposed. Johnson had defensive linemen he could send in in waves (at a time when that was easier to do without a salary cap).

I don't blame our lack of "superior talent evaluation" on McClay. I think he does about as good a job with the draft as any of the GMs out there. I blame it on our lack of acquiring quality players by other means to fill those other roles, specifically in the interior defensive line and at linebacker.

Other than the trade for Hankins and draft picks, just look at our acquisitions at these positions the last few years. In fact, it's hard to even name them all (players like Carlos Watkins, Christian Covington, a finished Gerald McCoy, a finished Dontari Poe). We've done a very poor job fixing the broken links in the chain.
