He had a very similar career in Miami and even they gave him an induction this year, so nothing holding the Cowboys back now.
University of Miami, Florida's administration, which is the main overseers of their Ring, and Jerry Jones share one thing in common. Both lack the proper evaluation ability for inducting qualified head coaches.
The U is an interesting case in differing perspectives for honoring individuals, who impacted the Hurricanes' history and legacy. One perspective is the university's administration that primarily approves inductees, along with an 'anonymous selection committee'. The other perspective is held by a non-profit UM Hall of Fame committee that operates an
on-campus museum, whose sole purpose is to recognize those student athletes,
coaches and administrators who have contributed the most to Hurricane
Athletics.
So.
On one hand, the UM Hall of Fame inducted Howard Schnellenberger (1979-1983), the guy who literally put the program on the collegiate map, in
1993, Jimmy Johnson (1984-1988) in
1996, and Dennis Erickson (1989–1994) in
2005.
On the other hand, Johnson and Erickson were inducted as a package deal this year into the UM Ring of Honor, 35 and 29 years after coaching the Hurricanes to a combined THREE national championships out of FOUR title game appearances. And Schenllenberger? He was not inducted in their Ring until several months after he
died in
2021, 38 years after the Hurricanes' first national championship.
Yes. Nothing is holding the Cowboys, I mean Jerry Jones, back now. After all, the
30th anniversary of Super Bowl XXVIII is only three months and some days away--the second of back-to-back National Football League championships. Jones may continue being just as slow as UM administration but finally take action and do the right thing. Or continue doing nothing at all. And that would not surprise anyone.
