"You see, when Jerry was buying the Cowboys, I can remember like it was yesterday. We were in his automobile and he said, ‘Jimmy, you’re in charge of the football, I’m in charge of the money and we’ll make sports history.’ Well, we made sports history. And everything worked fine for a long time and then all of a sudden we started winning and then when we started winning, things changed a little bit. There started to be a little bit of a tension.

"People say, ‘he meddled too much.’ No he didn’t meddle. It’s just that when we started winning, he wanted to be more in the spotlight. I was proud of what we accomplished. Maybe I didn’t want to share it. I take fault in a lot of it. I should’ve shared it more."

NFL legend Jimmy Johnson sheds light on Jerry Jones relationship: 'When we started winning, things changed' | Fox News

Hard to believe it was 30 years ago we were all watching an alltime great Dallas team start to demolish the league in rout to the first of 3 Super Bowl titles in 4 years.

Won't ever be another coach like Jimmy and won't ever be a team as good as those 92-95 Cowboys were.

It's a shame they couldn't have worked together for 10-15 years. We wouldn't have won it all every year but I bet we'd have won 5 or 6 for certain.

The meddling really started the year he hired Switzer and showed up to practice in full coaching gear.

People accused Jerry of meddling well before that, Jerry would come down on the sideline when Jimmy was there.

Nothing here that hasn't been hashed and rehashed before. It was good of Jimmy to admit to being part of the problem, however. I think Jerry realizes that he shared a part in that, also. Whether there's some resentment left over is more of a personal matter, though. All that is over, thank God. Perhaps Jimmie is partially motivated to say all this by wanting his rightful place in the ROH, but I'd imagine that's a subject for another day.

Sounds like 2 previously successful guys with a lot of pride and ego that found it difficult to share the credit. Usually owners stay behind the scenes but watching Jimmy get the lions share of it was too much to take.

It was probably inevitable but nice to hear Jimmy take some of the responsibility in the breakdown

Sure but doesn't showing up at practice in full coaching when you theoretically have a head coach kind of make a statement?

I heard an interview with Aikman a while back, he said Jimmy would talk about there would be plenty of credit in winning a SB and yet that was not fully true. I loved having Jimmy and think highly of him as a coach, but the breakup was a failure on both men's side. Egos of both Jimmy and Jerry is what ended that relationship.

I remember being in giant stadium. Phil Simms almost had an amazing come back. But before the game started Jimmy and Jerry , We’re walking on the field together . It’s just what they did. Totally agree about the no meddling

I totally agree but everybody wants to blame Jimmy. Or Jerry. When it was both of them. In their own way

he would show up in shorts and a baseball cap, calling that coaching gear is stretch. Jerry is not calling plays and frankly based on what Parcells has said and now Jimmy, the misconception of Jerry meddling is over blown. Is he involved? yes as GM he is involved as all GM are.

Jimmy is showing grace, while the buffoon still is doing what he’s doing and not putting Jimmy Johnson in the ROH where he should be. It takes zero effort for Jerry to put Jimmy in it. Everything else is tripe until then.

Maybe he’s waiting for a particular moment to do it. Not just because. But who the hell knows

It was shared in my opinion. Frankly I think Jimmy would have left regardless, he had never stayed in 1 place long, Jimmy style of coaching takes a lot out of a man and I think being in Florida was something he wanted.

He wasn't meddling then when he as on the sidelines, he was an excited high-energy owner celebrating what the team was doing.

Too bad he couldn't have just stayed that way.

There have been plenty of moments. These are all just excuses for what Jimmy had accomplished for the Cowboys. This is a move that can easily remedy a lot of Jerry self-inflicted bad PR.

The salary cap has been Jerry's kryptonite. I have no doubt that without it we would have been competing in the NFCCG nearly every year for the past couple decades. Jerry doesn't have a problem spending money, and would have kept this team stacked with all-pro's at every level. He has a problem when there's a limit to what he can do with it.

Also, loved Jimmy as a coach, but he didn't do much better when the cap came along. There's a reason he never came back to coaching after Miami.

Jimmy has told this story multiple times. Aikman called Jimmy in the fall of 94 and said things have changed around here. Jerry showing up to practice with full coaching gear AND A WHISTLE. He was more than standing around in a cap and shorts. He has been seriously meddling for just about the entire length of their almost three decade mediocrity.

Jimmy should have been in the RoH as soon as he hung up his coaching days after retiring from the Dolphins. No ifs, ands or buts.

But if he were waiting for a "moment" then at the very latest, he should have went into the RoH the night they opened the new stadium. Jones would have never got that hunk or garbage built if not for the success Jimmy had.
