I started comparing NFL GMs and their ages last year.
Below is a list of the 31 General Managers in the NFL who are also NOT NFL owners. Also included in the list is their age and how many years they have been in that current job as GM.
  • Arizona Cardinals | Monti Ossenfort, age 47 been GM in Ari 2 years.(Previously GM at Tenn 4 years)
  • Atlanta Falcons | Terry Fontenot, age 44, been GM in Atl since 2021.
  • Baltimore Ravens | Eric DeCosta, age 53, been GM in Balt since 2019.
  • Buffalo Bills | Brandon Beane, age 48 been GM in Buff since 2017.
  • Carolina Panthers | Dan Morgan, age 46 in his 2nd year.
  • Chicago Bears | Ryan Poles, age 39, been GM in Chicago since 2022.
  • Cincinnati Bengals | Duke Tobin, age 53, (technically he’s the “Director of Player Personnel” but serves as de facto GM for owner Mike Brown) He’s in his 24th year as bengals executive
  • Cleveland Browns | Andrew Berry, age 37, been GM in Cleveland since 2020
  • Denver Broncos | George Paton, age 54, been GM in Denver since 2021
  • Detroit Lions | Brad Holmes, age 45, been GM in Detroit since 2021
  • Green Bay Packers | Brian Gutekunst, age 51, been GM in GB since 2018
  • Houston Texans | Nick Caserio, age 48, been GM in Houston since 2021
  • Indianapolis Colts | Chris Ballard, age 55, been GM in Indy since 2017
  • Jacksonville Jaguars | Trent Baalke, age 61, been GM in Jax since 2021.
  • Kansas City Chiefs | Brett Veach, age 47, been GM in Kansas City since 2017.
  • Las Vegas Raiders | Tom Telesco, age 52, his 2nd year as GM in Vegas (was chargers GM from 2013-23)
  • Los Angeles Chargers | Joe Hortiz, age 49, in hist 2nd year as GM of chargers.
  • Los Angeles Rams | Les Snead, age 54, been rams GM since 2012
  • Minnesota Vikings | Kwesi Adofo-Mensah, age 43, GM in Minn since 2021
  • Miami Dolphins | Chris Grier, age 54, been GM in Miami since 2016.
  • New England Patriots | Elliott Wolf, age 42, in his first year as Pats GM
  • New Orleans Saints | Mickey Loomis, age 55, been NO GM since 2013
  • New York Giants | Joe Schoen, age 44, been Giants GM since 2022
  • New York Jets- VACANT- fired Joe Douglas, age 47, who had been jets GM since 2019
  • Pittsburgh Steelers | Omar Khan, age 48, been Steelers GM since 2022
  • Philadelphia Eagles | Howie Roseman, age 49, been Philly GM since 2019
  • San Francisco 49ers | John Lynch, age 53, been GM in SF since 2017
  • Seattle Seahawks | John Schneider, age 53, been GM in Seattle since 2010
  • Tampa Bay Buccaneers | Jason Licht, age 54, been GM in Tampa since 2014
  • Tennessee Titans | Ran Carthon, age 43, in his 2nd year as GM at Tenn
  • Washington Commanders | Adam Peters, age 44, in his 2nd year as GM in Wash
NFL GMs who are also owners:
  • Jerry Jones, age 82, is now the oldest GM in NFL history, has been GM of the Cowboys 36 years.
  • Stephen Jones is 60 (So SJ would be the second oldest GM in the league if he takes over, lol)
Average age of an NFL GM (without Jerry in count): 47.5
Oldest GM in league besides Jerry: Trent Baalke, Jacksonville GM, age 61.
Average length of tenure of NFL GMs other than Jerry: 8 years

Tom Landry was fired at 64 because the game had passed him. Tex Schramm was replaced by Jerry as GM in 1989 when Schramm was 68.
I know a lot fans think Stephen is really pulling most of the GM strings these days but he will be 61 in June.

It is very clear that being an NFL GM is now a young man’s game. Except in Dallas.

Good stuff as always Bob.

Unfortunately we have a very unique and bizarre situation under our dysfunctional ownership.

I may not live long enough to see it but history won’t be favorable to this ownership despite the early success with Jimmy.

This stat tells the story.

In an alternate world, if you told Jerry/Stephen they had 8 years to win a Super Bowl or else the family would cede control of the front office, the chances IMO are MUCH greater the team would reach a Super Bowl during that period.

But as long as things are business as usual in Dallas, what we've seen is what we'll continue to get.

Great post and 100% accurate. Jerry and the Jones family take great pride in embracing nepotism to its fullest. After all, winning when it really matters takes a back seat to Jerry's ego, being comfortable with a new head coach, $$$, Gene's beautiful artwork, Gene Jones Jeans sales at the Stadium's Victoria Secret, having the sun blind our players because Jerry likes the way the sun look in the stadium, etc. When nepotism and maximizing profits are your top priorities, then its not even a matter of IF the game has passed you by, Jerry has proven he hasn't learned anything in his time as a part-time NFL GM.

This post has also inspired me to buy some Dallas Mavs and Dallas Stars merch, teams that have played in a championship game in the past five years, instead of the past 30 years. How I spend my sports dollars won't affect Jerry and his reign of terror, but it's the principle of the issue that matters to me.

Yep and why we will continue taking a back seat to the premiere teams and franchises .

Cowboys are riding predominantly on their history alone . And too many fans still hold us in this light.

Chiefs GM Brett Veach is 47 next week. He has 3 SB rings just like Jerry. Veach was 11 years old when Jerry became the Cowboys GM, and was 18 the last time the Cowboys won a divisional playoff game.
Well, you're just "cherry-picking" an elite team that has won three Super Bowls in a short amount of time lol. Oh wait, it's just us and Washington who are so dysfunctional that we haven't played in an NFC championship game in 29 years and counting.

And my money is on Wash getting back there before we do.

That’s the thing. Having a normal situation doesn’t guarantee more success. It just continues providing the opportunity to finally get it right.

I haven’t heard from them this season since it went south. They kinda disappear like Dak trolls when we are playing well. But there are still many Cowboy fans who have supported this owner arguing he has put together a good team which has had more success than most teams in recent years.

And I assure you the next surge we make in the future they’ll be emerging again hailing their overly Homerish owner rhetoric .

I don't think Jerry's cashiers will cash any unknown checks, myself.

He brings in popular performers at half-time and concerts.
