New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton's pending appeal of a $15,000 fine for his criticism of game officials may have lost some momentum, because Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has been fined $25,000 by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell for the same offense, according to league and team sources.

Jones was fined last week after he criticized referee Ed Hochuli for his overall performance following Hochuli's gaffe in Week 1 against the San Diego Chargers.

Jones' $25,000 fine was a greater amount because owners are held to a higher standard. Steelers owner Dan Rooney was fined $25,000 last year for his criticism of game officials. Ironically, Jones and Rooney are strong internal supporters of Goodell.

Payton was fined for criticizing officials Monday after the Saints' 34-32 loss last Sunday in Denver. Payton planned to appeal because be believed Jones and Chargers coach Norv Turner had not been fined for similar comments.

While Jones was penalized, Turner was not because Goodell determined that Turner's one-word postgame description of Hochuli's blown call as "unacceptable" was his only negative remark.

The day after the Chargers-Broncos game, Turner publicly deferred questions to the league office and declined to comment further on Hochuli, which Goodell determined is the appropriate conduct.

IIRC, the only thing JJ said was that Hochuli "had been criticized" and did not criticize him directly.

This is typical from Goodell. In fact I'm pretty sure that JJ did not criticize Hochuli at all.

Jerry Jones rips whistle-happy referee Ed Hochuli

Tim MacMahon E-mail News tips

Jerry Jones threw a jab at Ed Hochuli, the referee under fire for a blown call that cost the Chargers a win in Denver, by calling him "highly criticized" earlier this week. Jerry threw a few haymakers at Hercules Hochuli during his weekly interview with 1310 The Ticket's Norm Hitzges this morning.

"Rest assured, we all see the error and the impact of a bad call like that," Jerry said. "Now, you could easily say that it rests in the competence of the official not to blow that whistle and maybe an emphasis on that would dramatically change just a real awareness and be punitive in some areas.

"You know, that guy is quick to call penalties. He's quick to draw. He's known for that. ... He's very quick. His crews call a lot of penalties. Maybe the answer is to tell people like that, 'Keep that whistle out your mouth.'"

Jerry elaborated by saying that the league doesn't want officials to call penalties unless the infractions affect the play or threaten the safety of a player. Then he suggested that a solution could be canning whistle-happy refs like Hochuli, who hasn't called a Cowboys game since last season's opener against the Giants.

"My gut here is the emphasis is going to have to be taking officials like that and getting somebody else if they're going to be penalty prone," Jerry said. "Or, in that case, not penalties, but just too quick to call the play dead."

That's an anti-ref rant that would make Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban proud.

I stand corrected, I don't think it is worth a $25,000 fine though, that's pretty tame.

That rant was well-worth $25K. Win and losses are premium commodities in the NFL and Ed Hochuli's mistake cost the Charges a 'W'. Goodell should prepare himself for handing out even more fines if Ed Hochuli or his peers continue to make goofball mistakes.

Dead on. Hopefully JJ works hard to make sure Hoch doesnt do a Dallas game the rest of this season.

Typical Roger the Rube. Act like it never happened and think people will forget about it. Just like Spygate.

I'm callin B.S. here. Ed "Houdini" should be called out. He runs his officiating crew and should be held to the same standards(higher, IMO) as the league holds JJ or any other owner. I applaud JJ for callin' this particular group of "borderline cronies" out and making them visible to well deserved criticism.
We just sit there and let these guys dictate a game? It's bad enough we have rules that favor one side of the ball, slow the game down and allow ticky-tack calls at the discretion of these crews we should at least be able control their "punch-drunk power trip". JMO, of course.........

Jerry Jones gets fined $25,000 for speaking the truth, Payton $15,000. Hochuli gets fined nothing for continuing to call games with his head up his...

The NFL is losing credibility. The Seahawk/Steeler superbowl was a fix. How many other games will be fixed?

LOL, I don't think he really cares about $25K. Probably the same as a tip he gives to a waiter at a restaurant.

However, as a matter of principle, Hochuli should be fined or suspended for the way he botched that play.

I would love for them to announce fines for refs out in the open. However I doubt they do or would.

If a coach makes a bone headed play, nobody gets fined by the NFL if they say it out loud. If a player makes a bone headed play, nobody gets fined by the NFL is they say it out loud.

I have a funny feeling we'll get him for a playoff game, and he'll botch all sorts of calls to get back at Jerry. Remember, the refs aren't held accountable for anything, so why should Hochuli care?

He was "marked down". I don't know what that means exactly in terms of any kind of financial penalty, but it makes it significantly harder for him to land the sweet post-season gigs. One would have to imagine that seeing him in the Super Bowl after costing the Chargers the game (and maybe a lot more depending on how the season unfolds) is now next to impossible.

As it should be.

But you have to give it to him...the guy's got some guns. :flex:

I'll believe that Hochuli doesn't get postseason gigs because he was "marked down" when I see it. Speaking of the devil, he started off the Atl vs. Car game with two horrible personal foul flags. One came on a play that was a pick six for Carolina that was called back on a hit to the head by Peppers on Ryan, except for Peppers didn't hit Ryan in the head. And the second flag, on the very next play, on Na'il Diggs...when it was really on Thomas Davis...who still really didn't do anything.

Even still, it's nice extra $$$ for guys like Hochuli to get postseason gigs, but these refs get paid quite nicely to begin with. It's not like there won't be Xmas gifts for the Hochuli family if he can't ref a postseason game.

The funny thing is, it didn't get much attention when he said it, but now that he's been fined, it's a subject being discussed on the pregame shows this week. It only became "worth" the $25,000 to Jerry once the fine was handed down. Now he's back in the press, and Hochuli gets put under further scrutiny with an owner like Jerry trashing him.
