JJ & SJ aren't looking at trade chart, but at million dollar chart

Bottom line: the diff between the 4 pick and the 15 pick last year was about 9 million dollars in guaranteed money. That is the "slot" more or less under the contract between players and union I believe. That was the contract last year, it has only gone up a little I'm sure since then ... I haven't kept up with the capologists here but for sure it ain't gone down. Not as smart as you guys, I'm just a part-time fan, maybe you guys can correct me. Pardon me if this topic has been brought up recently here .. I couldn't find it lately ..

Amari Cooper at 4 pick last year got 14.8 mil signing bonus. Melvin Gordon at 15 pick last year got 6 mil signing bonus.

I know it ain't much money in the main for Jerry, but he is still up in the middle of the night mad about what he paid Mo Claiborne. For someone unproven.

Cowboys under JJ have a history of trade downs, in part this is why.

Unproven is the operative word .. Jerry and Stephen are thinking the same thing in the middle of the night these next few weeks.

Jerry and Stephen are grilling scouts these next few weeks: Is this player we might get at the 4th pick .. nine or 10 million dollars better than the player we can get at 15, they are asking?.. Of course if we get a 2nd round pick to trade down or a 3 and/or 4 pick or even (tears) a 5 pick to trade down even fewer picks from 4 to say 9 then those bonuses/guaranteed money of the 2 or 3 (or 4th round picks do they get anything guaranteed anyway?) are pretty minuscule bonuses. They don't add up, won't add up to 9 million for the privilege of trading down. Cheap by comparison.

The recent note on BTB shows teams losing points on trades by trading down in the first round. Oh yeah no lie, I would do it too, to save millions, when A vs. B comes up in the draft room and no one can say that B is going to be better than A, for sure.

I write this cause of talk that the Titans may want to move up out of the 15th pick all of a sudden and have lots of ammunition to pay whoever wants to play with them, including Cowboys, who might get any dang thing for Tunsil at the 4 pick with teams like the Titans that want to play ball with us while they are drinking champagne in their draft room .. They might get drunk ..

The same money will get spent one way of the other...just best to spend it wisely. Hopefully, Dallas will.

Sigh. Seriously I am a fool, I didn't know it was 10 million bucks worth.

Does anybody on this board think of this in the draft, figure it in? .. Everyone is counting points on the draft chart.

That's the price of a painting, to place in the bathroom at Jerry World. Jerry's wife would talk him into it ... I look up as I pee ..

2nd round guaranteed money: maybe 2.5 mil at top (?) then down
3rd round guaranteed money: maybe 900K and down
4th round guaranteed money: maybe 600K and down

You see the Boys haggling in free agency low balling or releasing players then all of a sudden in the draft 7 or 8 million goes out the window for the pretty poor drafts we've always have .. this year it will be twice that at least cause we're drafting higher.

Best to you guys I still have 4 beers left in my 12 pack .. better than you ha ha ..

Sorry to reply to my own reply, but remember ..

Jimmy Johnson told the story that Jerry would walk through V Ranch every night late hours, turning off the lights, to save electricity.

Jerry spends millions, but saves pennies, in unexpected ways .. I think the draft is one of those ways that he saves pennies.

You have a strong point

The 4th overall pick will get a 4yr/24m contract all guaranteed
The 15th overall pick will get a 4yr/11m contract all guaranteed

Plus the 5th year option is a lot cheaper if you are drafted in the second half of the 1st round

But he really doesn't save it, right?
That money DOES get spent on players, just reallocated.
Dallas is generally a team that is right up against the cap every year.
The argument--at least legit one--has never been that Jerry Jones is cheap on spending for players. He spends the max or close to it.
The argument is whether or not he spends it wisely.

Numbers can be arranged to tell any story you want.

When a movie studio pays percentage points on profits they can make Star Wars look like it lost money. Same with boxing promoters.

DAL can be close to the cap without coming close to spending every available dollar. They call it Cash over the Cap spending.

Dont forget to add in the contract or contracts of the extra pick or picks that you get in the trade down.

Whatever the cap implications, the hard dollars are the same. Either the dollars are in Jerry's pockets, or in one of his players. And there's no argument to be made that he doesn't put a lot of dollars in the pockets of his players.

Then why are we close to 89% spending floor?
