I'm sorry , I love my Dallas Cowboys, but a reality show? I see how things get out of hand with these shows, and to think the Dallas Cowboys would put on a display of non talent such as these guys, is really disheartening to me as a long time fan of the game and the Cowboy organization.

For Jerry Jones to guarantee a roster spot for any of these guys competing is even more disheartening .

They all have a sob story of why they weren't drafted, and lets face facts here, if they had half the talent needed to play in the NFL, they would be here now.

This is one show I refuse to watch, it's just not a good thing for the already overly scrutinized saga of this franchise.

Who ever wins gets the "Todd Lowber spot" 80th spot on the 80 man training camp roster that some other UFA who's probably not going to make the team either would have gotten, big deal...

you should watch it just for Irvin, Bates and coach Joe if nothing else

In general I agree that reality show venues are not the way to go to acquire player talent. However the Cowboys haven't developed the show, Michael Irvin has. I don't see a major distraction. If the reality show winner earns a roster spot it would only be because he was exceptional and outcompeted players with more experience or skills.

Sometimes talented athletes detour or hit misfortune in life but get it together again or recover. We have seen undrafted free agents make it even to pro-bowls from time to time.

No doubt I do concur, but these guys just seem to be like camp fodder, or blocking/tackling dummies, no pun intended.

It does have some ties to the franchise though , I'm afraid, because it was with Jerry's permission , that Irvin has guaranteed that 80Th roster spot.

I'm not contending it will be a distraction to the organization, but more of an embarrassment in terms of this once proud and viable organization.

Embarrassment? It all depends on how you look at it. Sure, opposing fans and trolls will likely use the show as ammunition against us, but do we really care what they think? No!

Every team in the league usually takes a weekend to determine what this show is taking a month to do. So if anything, the Cowboys are being alot more thorough in their research behind the 80th man. And beyond that, there are no guarantees that this guy will make the 53 man roster. But what is guaranteed is whoever the winner is, he likely will be in much better physical and mental shape to take a spot on the roster then someone the Cowboys signed off the street.

That aside, as I mentioned in another thread, I'm not really impressed with any of these guy's save maybe Holley, and he would be hard pressed to beat out Stanback for a spot. So, take this for what it is. It's a small dose of football to get us fanatic's through until the season begins.

One thing I've learned in the 45years of being a football player first, then a coach, and finally a fan is, when a franchise brings attention to themselves with "reality shows" rather than just going out with all the picks that were stockpiled in this years draft, and do the research that builds champions it is an embarrassment to me as a long , long time fan.

The Landry era, would never allow anything this preposterous to take place, or advanced scouting dept was one of the strong suits of this proud franchise, this to me, just makes it seem like a three ring circus, first with Adam Jones debacle, and the "worm" in the locker-room, and the in fighting, and all the Ed Werder scrutiny of T.O. , I just think this team needs a break from the spotlight, and get back to basics, "old school" football, the same theory that helped this team win 5 rings and trophies.

We play in Texas, not in Hollywood California, I don't want this team to be remembered like the Raiders with that circus atmosphere there with Al Davis showing his age, with his press conferences and all the hoopla involved around the release of Lane Kiffen.

Fly under the radar, and hard work, dedication, advanced reputable scouting departments will find that diamond in the rough, not reality shows.

I understand it's related to Dallas Cowboy football, but not really football.

That's just my opinion, it's not a knock on your preference or your feelings, just my own personal beliefs on how chemistry, comradery and team unity is built from the ground up, this team has lacked that for a very long time, time to change the face of the Dallas Cowboys, old school style and get back to prominence.

If a Reality show is the biggest worry I have...I am doing something right.

Unfortunately that is not the biggest thing I have to worry about nor this team has to worry about.

Guy gets on the roster, either makes it as ST and JAG or he does not. No problem for the Cowboys IMO. But like I said...I, and the team, have bigger things to worry about.

This is not hard knocks.

The team isn't involved other than the player getting invited to camp so I don't see anything wrong with it. I doubt anyone from the show makes the team.

If my memory serves me correct, the Landry era Cowboys used to have tryouts open to the public for many of the years he coached, if so, whats the difference besides the cameras?

Anyone else remember this?

They had over 100 UDFAs in camp every year. At times many more. Drew Pearson came from such a camp I believe.

Good point. In any event, it is Cowboys related so I am watching it. Plus...I enjoy the soothing sight and sound of projectile vomiting.

...and another thing Landry's Cowboys just didn't bring in football players, they brought in track guys and basketball players.

I respect your opinion on this; but I still disagree. I honestly don't put this in the same category as I would Hard Knocks, the player whose initials shall go unnamed, and PacmakeitrainMan (which is probably the most befitting moniker, considering he has to be slightly retarted to get in a fight on Pro vs. Joes).

Furthermore, I think your assignment of blame falls short in terms of last season circus. The ring leader of all that drama, at the end of the day, was the media. And that likely will never change. Why? Because the Cowboy's fanship extends beyond state and country borders, the readership for anything involving the Cowboy's is far extended beyond what must teams will ever enjoy. So, please understand that prestige you refer to in large part is the reason the Cowboys now are constantly under the microscope.

This is one show I refuse to watch, it's just not a good thing for the already overly scrutinized saga of this franchise.

I was of this opinion once too, but after seeing the first couple of shows I am convinced that the idea is pure genius on several levels:

1) One more chance for the team to find an overlooked guy like Bill Bates. Yeah, its a long shot, but you never know.

2) A final chance for all the guys who didn't make it for whatever reason. If they fail this then they know they just weren't meant for the NFL.

3) Timing - this show is perfectly timed in that dead zone from the end of the draft to the beginning of camp. This is typically the sports coma period of the year when all there is to get the fix is baseball, and frankly, that just doesn't do enough for me. This show gives me at least some form of football.

4) Ratings - If I had to guess from all the replays on Spike TV, the show is getting high ratings.

5) Seriousness - this isn't like some MTV reality show, these are guys who are far above the normal joe average. They are all great athletes, and Irvin, Bates, and Coach Joe are taking it deadly serious.

6) No guarantees - the player who wins only gets a shot in camp on the 80 man roster. There is no guarantee that he will end up on the roster, but the fact is that he has a shot at it.

I honestly think this idea is revolutionary, and every team will be running something like this.

What if Landry, Tex, and Brandt were in there prime today? I bet the Cowboys would be the ones putting on the show and it would be for all positions just like the old open tryouts. Tex would promote it, Brandt would have already scoured the country looking for players to bring to the show, and Landry would have his coaches running the players through the drills.

Tex would have been all over this reality show.

After watching the first two episodes, at the very least, the guy that comes out of this show is going to be one in shape, tough, guy. He'll be able to compete at some level.

Dick Vermeil with Philly did it many years ago. Dallas use to have tryouts at local Texas colleges.

I don't get the hate for the 4th and Long show. If you aren't watching, then you are really missing out IMHO. The show, as others mentioned, is worth watching just for Michael Irvin, Bill Bates, Jay Novecek, Nate Newton, etc. The show itself is good for the May football fix.

And what's the worst that can happen? A guy gets an invitation to training camp and gets cut after the first pre-season game?

Obviously, to each their own, but this is must see TV for a Cowboys fan, especially someone who enjoyed the 90's teams.

I have been a fan since the team was born as the Cowboys, and I totally concur that Tex would have been all over this. Tom Landry, ol' Tex, and Brandt...those guys were true innovators in the scouting and promotional worlds of the NFL. Yes, we're talking about completely different eras, but you can bet they would have been all over this if today's "reality show" world was available to them.
