Burrow to play for "discount"?

It looks like Joe Burrow--specifically stating it would be to help other teammates get paid--is looking to take less on his new contract.

Quote from Burrow
"Whenever you have guys on the team that need to be paid, that's always on your mind," Burrow said. "You want that to be a focal point. We're working to make that happen."

Quote from Chase
"He knows what he has to do to win and he wants to win," said Chase, who will not be eligible for a new deal until next offseason. "He's a winning guy. He's not a quarterback that's always interested in money and all that other stuff. He just wants to win, and that's the big thing about Joe."

I don’t believe Brady started taking discounts until after he earned his first big contract, Plus, he was married to a woman that was making more money than him. He could afford to take discounts.

"I'll play for only $49,999,999.99 a year. I don't need $50M. Let the other guys get paid too."

I don't think his wife had anything to do with his decisions. Brady was that rare athlete who enjoyed winning Lombardi's more that he enjoyed breathing, and would do anything to compete for them. That included taking pay cuts so the Pats could bring in top talent. Brady is the one who said he didn't give a damn about pro bowl nominations, his goal was to play in the game a week later. If anyone on the Dallas roster had even a 1/4 of his passion for winning maybe they would make a better effort come playoff time.

So Burrow would trump even Brady by getting a head start...lol

Agree
His wife had zip to do with his decisions. People just say that to take away from him taking less.
Somebody arguing for 150 mil vs 130 mill...I mean come on. They a preposterously rich either way.
Dozens of millions are plenty. The wife's money was a separate thing
It's not like you can "afford" or not "afford" stuff at that point.

They ALL can afford to take discounts when we are talking this level of money.
Some do it, some don't.
It's their right and choice, but it's fact.

The bottom line is that they have a right to max out or not.
Not gonna judge either way, personally.

I know the union gets pissed if they don't max out, but that's another story.

He was definitely all about winning Super Bowls but I don’t remember him taking a discount until he got his first big contract and Gisele was making $300 million a year. It’s not like every QB is going to have the opportunities Tom Brady has had to make huge money outside of football. Joe Burrow might accept less than $50 million per season but he’s still going to get paid a lot.

Let's wait and see how much he signs for........taking less money is not the same as signing a team-friendly contract so other players can get paid. In other words, If he takes less money, I'm assuming his contract will not make him the highest-paid QB.

Brady made gas money compared to his wife.

I’ll be surprised if he accepts less than $50 million per season. He’s been much better in the playoffs than Lamar Jackson and he’s gotten his team to a Super Bowl. He almost got Cincinnati to the Super Bowl last season.

Maybe I'm missing something but this doesn't say he's taking less money. Just he's going to work with management to make sure his contract isn't the reason they can keep other players. In other words, they can do BOTH.......make him the highest paid AND make sure other players are paid.

But he did clarify a few points Tuesday in his first media availability since the end of the 2022 season. The Cincinnati star knows exactly what he's looking for in his next deal, which could make him the highest-paid player in the league.

As he goes through talks with the Bengals, Burrow said he's keeping teammates who could also receive contract extensions in consideration.

"Whenever you have guys on the team that need to be paid, that's always on your mind," Burrow said. "You want that to be a focal point. We're working to make that happen."

I was listening to a sports radio station and two of the guys on there were talking about this exact thing. One of them was pointing out that even his contracts way back were all under market value. Not as much as later on in his career, but significant none the less. That would date back about 5 years before he got married. But I'm sure she was a big part of the reason.
