Report: Mets acquire LHP Santana

January 29, 2008
MCLEAN, VIRGINIA (TICKER) -- Apparently the New York Mets have won the Johan Santana sweepstakes.

USA Today reported Tuesday that the Minnesota Twins have agreed to deal their ace lefthander to the Mets for four prospects.

The Mets agreed to send outfielder Carlos Gomez, pitchers Philip Humber, Deolis Guerra and Kevin Mulvey to Minnesota for the two-time Cy Young Award winner.

USA Today reported the deal is pending the Mets and Santana reaching agreement on a six or seven-year contract extension, and Santana passing a physical.

According to the report, New York has been granted a 48 to-72-hour window to reach a deal with Santana, who has a no-trade clause that he will waive if agreement is reached on a contract extension.

I am a big Met fan. I can not believe they got him for so little. I think the GM for the Twins overplayed his hand. He could have had a better package from both the yankees and the RedSox.

It is funny tho that the experts were saying in December that the Mets did not have the prospects to make the trade. I guess Gammons and Stark got some bad information-----Again!!!!

After the Mets collapse last year, they needed something to help them out. Pitching cures a lot in baseball and the Mets just got the best pitcher in baseball. I think the Phillies blood pressure just went up.

Ohly crap you can say that again!!!!!!! I mean it's tough to part with such potential but this cat is the best pitcher in MLB IMHO. I love Gomez and Delois could be a #1 but he's still a LONG way away and the Mets have to win NOW! I can't believe we didn't have to give our best prospect, Fernando Martinez. I just can't tell you how happy i am!!!

I wish we could have gotten more for Lastings, but his antics drove his price down so far we were lucky to get something for him.

Santana dealt to Mets
Twins receive four prospects in return for ace

MINNEAPOLIS -- The Twins and Mets have agreed to a deal that would send two-time Cy Young Award winner Johan Santana to New York in exchange for four prospects, an MLB official confirmed on Tuesday.
The deal is contingent on the Mets and Santana reaching an agreement on a six-or-seven year contract extension. Indications are that Santana is seeking a deal worth close to $150 million dollars. The Mets have been granted a 48-to-72 hour window to negotiate the extension and Santana is expected to waive his no-trade clause if an agreement is reached. The left-hander must also pass a physical.
The four prospects that that Twins would be receiving in the deal are outfielder Carlos Gomez and pitchers Phil Humber, Deolis Guerra and Kevin Mulvey.
One notable name that was not included in the deal was the Mets' top prospect, outfielder Fernando Martinez. Earlier reports had been that the Twins were asking for Martinez in order to complete the deal.
"We are hoping to bring some finality to this soon but I have nothing to report yet," Twins general manager Bill Smith said.
The trade would leave the Twins without their ace pitcher, who holds a 93-44 record in eight seasons with the Twins. Since joining the rotation full-time in 2004, Santana has struck out at least 235 batters in each season. He was 15-13 with a 3.33 ERA for the Twins last season, which was considered to be a "down" year for the southpaw.

Gomez, 22, spent 58 games with the Mets last season and likely will fill the Twins hole in center field. He's considered to be a five-tool player whose primary tools are his speed and above-average defense. There have been some questions concerning his offense during his four Minor League seasons as Gomez struck out 250 times in 1,251 at-bats with just a .339 on-base-percentage during that span.
Humber, 25, is the only other prospect in the deal that has seen time in the Majors. The Mets' first-round pick in the 2004 First-Year Player Draft has made five appearances for the Mets, including one start, over the past two seasons. He went 11-9 with a 4.27 ERA at Triple-A New Orleans last year, his first full season after undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2005. Mulvey spent most of last season at Double-A Binghamton and was 11-10 with a 3.32 ERA in 26 starts there. Guerra, a 6-foot-5 right-hander out of Venezuela, struck out 66 batters while amassing a 4.01 ERA in 89 2/3 innings for Class A Port St. Lucie of the Florida State League last season. He will turn 19 in April. Kelly Thesier is a reporter for MLB.com. This story
