John Abraham as an OLB option?

....Scanning the free agent list, one candidate catches my eye -- John Abraham. He'll turn 34 this summer, but he's still an A-list pass rusher. Abraham's agent said yesterday that he expects the Falcons will let Abraham hit the market. Older players represent a major risk, but Abraham's production has been high and steady the last five years. He's averaged 10.9 sacks per season in that span, with very little help. He's generated 36% of the Falcons' sacks since '07, the same percentage DeMarcus Ware has for the Cowboys...

Whoa! You did not just offer up that! :lmao2:

No way, no how will John Abraham EVER be a 3-4 OLB. The man has some pass rush moves, but couldn't cover a dead butterfly. Lets not even discuss his age while trying to cover TE/RBs. (not to mention his inconsistent past)

Any over 30 player threads to sign....should be automatically deleted.....

He's tough in both pass pressure and in run defense. The age doesn't seem to hinder a player such as Ray Lewis...and even Greg Ellis put up into that neighborhood. Thirty is an excuse, by someone wanting someone chic and new on the scene....kind of like a security blanket in sports viewing.

You can get good value on a short term deal for an over-30 player if it's the right guy, and the right deal. Look at Keith Brooking's first year in Dallas. It's crazy to shut ourselves off from talented players if they can help us out.

I'm not sure Brooking is that guy. He's not a replacement for Spencer, but as a situational rusher on a good line, a player like him could be effective for us.

I think its a much better idea than franchising (renting) Spencer for a year. It wouldn't surprise me if he had a good year playing opposite Ware.

I wouldn't worry about John's ability to perform but his health affecting that issue. It's his health that has been his problem since college. He is a freak of nature. I'd love to have him on a three year contract with the first two guaranteed. Then pray for him to be healthy enough to get 10 sacks a year.

No.

Too old. Too injury prone. Not enough experience at the position.

John Abraham was drafted by Parcells and played 34 OLB with the Jets.

I would agree with too injury prone to be consistently conunted upon. However, he has played OLB before and at a very high level.

John Abraham left the Jets because he didn't want to play in a 3-4.

John Abraham left the Jets because the Falcons offered a substantial amount of more money to him up front. I'm sure that had a lot more to do with it, anyway.

he is rare athlete...he can play in both 3-4 or 4-3 ...that parts not even a question mark. Its how much he wants and is he healthy enough for good year.

So what. That was not the question I answered. I only stated, correctly I might add, that he had experience in the 3-4. Thanks for confirming my post. ;)

I never stated that I wanted him to play here.

He'll be 34 in a couple of months.

I watched the kid play at USC. He was a pure joy to watch play.

Father time catches us all, and at this point in his career, he has rarely played a full 16 games.

I agree with you; health and age are the questions, not talent or skill.

No.

That's better than saying, "Not enough experience at the position". I can buy the age factor, I can't buy your first reply.
