John Elway was This close to being a Cowboy

Man, how this would a altered history......

Drafting Elway or Marino, Montana or even Jerry Rice changes the history of the NFL in a way we’d never imagine.

At least for the Cowboys, I suspect no Jerry Jones and Jimmy Johnson also don’t think we draft Troy or Michael Irvin (if Rice on the roster) and very likely no 90s dynasty.

Also, Montana may not have been a hall of famer without Walsh.

But would have been interesting what Landry would have done with Elway.

Michael Irvin was drafted before Jerry Jones and Jimmy Johnson. It was no secret that the Cowboys were going to draft Aikman. Landry had even attended one of his games.

Montana was destined for greatness no matter where he went. The Notre Dame-University of Houston game told us who Joe Montana was.

Dallas had planned on drafting Jerry Rice. Just before the Cowboys pick the 49ers traded up just in front of the Cowboys and took him. Schram was livid.

but we probably aren’t in a position to draft Irvin if we have Elway in 87’

Brandt was referring to a pre draft offer. The Colts still believed that they could sign Elway and didn't understand the degree too which John's father hated the Colts HC, a former college nemesis.

Also, the Cowboys offered three "legitimate" starters?

I don't think it ever had a chance of happening.

Interesting that Brandt says the Cowboys had a better shot at getting Elway than Marino. They literally passed on Marino in the draft.

Big fat NO........in fact, I'm not sure Jerry even gets a chance to buy the team in 1989. I like to think Elway would have delivered at 1 SB in 6 years.
Definitely an interesting scenario. I always preferred Troy growing up but Elway played in a LOT of Super Bowls - I think 5?

Interesting fact, but if you did get Elway in 83, would you have gotten Aikman in 89?
No, for 2 reasons. First, it would be a wasted pick because we would already have a standout QB, and second because with Elway we almost certainly wouldn’t have sucked so bad we would have had a high enough draft pick.
