John Phillips

I don't care how much Phillips has shown his development took a MAJOR hit last year.

I wouldn't toss out Bennett just yet because Phillips had a bad injury in a crucial part of his career.

Bennett is a very, very good blocker and can be a good pass-catcher when you need him to, and does so at a low price.

Phillips is a question mark at best, but a possible great tight end option, again, at a low price.

You keep them both until it becomes impossible to keep all three. Witten stays by default. Whomever between Phillips and Bennett distinguishes himself better will stay. But this question shouldn't even be raised this year.

I am a huge fan of John Phillips, he will be around alot longer than Bennett even though people wont admit it. He has a desire to improve & make the most out of every snap.

I think folks need to get over sweatin' Martellus. Think of it this way, our TE depth is set. Perhaps Marty B. never develops into the next great thing, but what he has proven is that he's a very good blocker.

If Phillips comes back as expected we are three-deep at TE. When you're assembling your roster every season and you have the luxury of not having to address a position, you're that much better off.

I agree. Falling short of expectations doesn't mean a person has to be run out of town. If a guy is still useful then it makes sense to keep him even if he isn't quite the player some had hoped for. It certainly doesn't make sense to run him off with Phillips being so uncertain. I think a lot of fans take things like this too personal, as if it's some kind of personal affront if a guy falls short of expectations, and they then respond by being vindictive rather than viewing the situation rationally.

You're a huge fan of a third string tight-end?

Despite the snarky comments from the great unwashed, I am hopeful that Phillips can live up to his promise, because Manchild Marty Bennett sure has not.

Traded Marty before he has no trade value.

Why would we trade him when we have no certainty of a quality No. 2 TE in place. It makes no sense.

We'll be ok when we draft Luke Stocker in the 4th round.

We need to break out the 4 TE set!

Flirst, I would say that Phillips last year, while healthy, showed more promise than Marty B. Second, how could Phillips be any worse than the aforementioned Marty B?

But, most important, are you implying that Marty B is a "quality No. 2 TE?
I hope not, but it looks like you are.
At the very least, Phillips (I hope) won't be making stupid videos and making stupid statements.

And all this talk about how great Marty is at blocking, great, but I'd prefer he be a greater receiving TE.

And finally, three words: Marty B was a wasted draft pick and we are still waiting for him to mature!

Now show me one that ignores "thread starters" which is the real problem.

I don't know about you, but when I click on a link that say John Phillips, I expect it to be about John Phillips and not another ignorant we have to get rid of that lousy Martellus Bennett guy.

1st, showing "priomise" in a few games catching a few passes and then missing an entire season with a knee injury doesn't do much to inspire confidence. You don't start cutting people based on an assumption that he will become something special after seeing him catch 7 passes or based on coming back 100% after a season ending knee injury. That makes no sense.

As for Bennet himself, I have no problem making a move with him IF we have an alternative we can feel confident in. A guy with next to no experience and who sat out an entire year with injury doesn't qualify. In the absence of signing someone else, why wouldna't we at least go to training camp with both Bennett and Phillips and see how things shake out. If Phillips is 100% and picks up right where he left off, Bennett would become expendable in my eyes, but that's just way too much to simply assume right now.

At Last years TC MB immediately overtook Phillips, despite starting camp injured. It's gonna be really difficult for Phillips to overtake MB.

That's not how I remember it. Phillips was having a great TC and was getting targeted a lot in preseason and making some outstanding catches before he got hurt.
