The capacity of the University of Louisiana-Lafayette's Cajun Field, where Dallas Cowboys rookie tight end John Stephens Jr. played his college ball, is some 36,900 ... a stark contrast from the massive amount of seats he saw at AT&T Stadium during Saturday night's preseason opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

And yet, the lights never proved too bright for Stephens Jr., who was the game's leading receiver with five catches for 56 yards and a score.

Stephens Jr., a Logansport, La., native who spent the first three years of his college career at TCU, seemed right at home back in the Lone Star State, producing a night he won't soon forget.

“I loved it," Stephens Jr. said. "It was a great experience. Every kid’s dream. Definitely playing for the Dallas Cowboys, one of the biggest teams in America, it was a great feeling.“

Perhaps most importantly, Stephens Jr.'s impressive showing was simply a continuation of what he's done throughout training camp, only adding to the profile of a legitimate summer riser.

What happened with this guy? I assume he is still on the roster and recovered. I rarely see him spoken about. He was a bright flash last year in training camp and preseason showing good hands and fluid route running. He is listed as a WR but he played more as a receiving TE from what I recalled. He is an interesting combo guy that seems like he is too big for DB's to cover but too fast for LB's.

Stephen was high on him during the press conference, I'm thinking we'll trade Ferg soon so he can take over!!!!!

Yea, I don't know about that, but I am intrigued that they have him listed as a WR.

Do you guys also remember David Durden?
He was also a promising rookie last pre-season until he got hurt. Maybe we have some young WRs to be excited about!

We sure do, hopefully they develop well with our backups so we can see them build for the pre season

NFL.com lists him as a TE still so who knows. Honestly it might still be too early to speculate on where some of these tweeners will be playing, but it could be a scenario where the Cowboys feel they have a ton of competition for the final TE spot so they think he has a better chance to make the team if he can win a WR spot.

John Stephens Jr. was a WR when he was at TCU & Louisiana-Lafayette. The Cowboys made him a move TE or h/back and ran plays that no other TE was running on the team. The roster on the team site is riddled with old info or inaccuracies that was wrong from the start or never updated. He was 6-5 1/2 232 at the combine not the 221 the roster shows. That is from an old college listing.

If all goes as expected, Stephens takes Hendershot's spot. Spann-Ford takes McKeon's spot, since McKeon was not re-signed.
You do realize that people speaking about this guy it's all just opinion to know if this guy will even make the roster let alone take somebody spot that goes for all of those seems like McCarthy's in love with Mckeon being the third guy as a blocker or whatnot but it's going to be a numbers game they got like 7 tight ends on this roster right now for camp it's ridiculous.... I think they might need to go deep at running back and possibly wide receiver before they worry about all these hanger ONS at tight end..

A coaches mis-match maker dream.
Catch teams in wrong package...audible to it
Be a great blocker out wide....but also a perfect high point, back shoulder target

again I say I find it excessive but they're not keeping these dudes all active I don't even think they're gonna be able to keep them all on the roster and the practice squad so there's gonna be an odd man out and the fact that we're talking about a guy that hasn't even been talked about in two years that's my point he's probably the odd man out how he beats out some of these other guys I don't know.... I mean wasn't that the question where is this guy while I'm saying if nobody's heard of him how do you think he's gonna beat out everyone on our roster to even be lucky enough to make it to the practice squad let alone the 53.......????????

Last year is not two years and as I already stated "they" say he was going to make the team. He was also the only "TE" that ran the plays he was running. He was the only player that had the physical type to run those plays. They don't have anyone else to do it.

People have heard of him. He was making plays in preseason last year and was likely to make the team before he got hurt.

He was reportedly going to make the roster last year over Hendershot if he didn’t get injured, according to the beat writers.
