A class act, who was at his best in front of the camera.

There are so many of todays comedians that owe their success to Carson. Had he not given the likes Jerry Seinfeld, David Letterman, Joan Rivers, David Brenner, Jeff Foxworthy, Ray Romano, the list could go for page, a shot on his show, who knows where'd they be.

Thank you Johnny.

Still hard to believe. I bawled like a baby when he retired and I bawled like a baby when I heard of his passing this weekend. Johnny Carson was one of a kind. The old saying that everyone can be replaced didn't apply to him. Never again will there be anyone that can stand in his shoes.

I heard Jay Leno is doing a tribute tonight on the Tonight Show. If you ask me... one day isn't enough to cover such a long career on that show. They should be dedicating the entire week to Carson, afterall, he made that show what it is.

Rest in Peace Mr. Carson - Thank you for the years of laughter - You won't be forgotten.

I think the one I always remember is one week Carson had come back from vacation, Don Rickles had been hosting in his absence.

Apparently Rickles had gotten carried away and broken the wooden cigarette box that had sat on Carson's desk for a long while.

When Carson discovered the box was not only broken, but that Rickles had left it there feebly put back together, kinda like a little kid does when they wreck something, he made a big deal out of it, jokingly really, but trying to act like he was upset.

Someone off-camera told him that Rickles was filming an episode of CPO Sharkey in the studio directly across the hall, and Carson grabbed a cameraman and proceeded to bust onto the set and confront Rickles who was left speachless for probably what was one of the few times in his life.

Really funny stuff, especially since I just happened to be watching that night, and saw it all live.

Yep...great stuff...

Do you remember the look on Carson's face when he was asking who filled in for him the night before? Classic stuff...

Yeah, and then Rickles did the "Ralph Kramdon" from the Honeymooners, "ham-a-na,ham-a-na,ham-a-na" trying to get out some type of an explanation, as Carson just berated him mercilessly. :D

Last night, Rickles was interviewed...he truly liked Carson..very much...

So the interviewer asked something dumb like, "If you could speak to Johnny right now, what would you say"

And he responded, "I'd tell him he's really getting on my nerves...I wanted to watch the football game and instead I'm stuck doing a memorial for you."

Classic Rickles..

Of course, there was the time Rickles wandered out on to the Tonight Show set while Carson was getting a back massage....and Carson ended up throwing a fully clothed Rickles, into a pool that was on the set..

Rickles just walks onto the set right in the middle of the bit, right?

They were great together...

My parents were never big Carson fans, so when I got my first TV when I was in high school (late 1970s), I would retreat to my room every week night and watch Johnny.

I'm one of those people who love routine, so I loved the consistency of Johnny and his show. The music, the coming through the curtains, Doc giving his one-handed salute, Ed giving his two-handed salute, his skits such as Karnac .....

Johnny was incredibly comfortable and natural on TV and the chemistry he had with Ed and Doc was perfect. I also can't leave out the great Tommy Newsome, the butt of many of Johnny's jokes when Tommy filled in for Doc.

Man, I miss that.

I'll miss Johnny.

Yep... that was a time when you could count on two things... Johnny Carson on M-F after the news... and Tom Landry roaming the sidelines while leading the Cowboys to the NFC Championship almost yearly...

Those were the days... :)
