Giants to gain LB Jon Beason in trade

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A trade that would send linebacker Jon Beason from the Carolina Panthers to the New York Giants will go through if the three-time Pro Bowler passes a physical, according to multiple Internet reports.

Beason has a physical scheduled with the Giants on Friday morning, a person with knowledge of the situation told ESPN.com.

I like this. Seems like a knee jerk reaction that does more harm than good.

Beason isn't going to help this team get out of a 0-4 hole. The guy was benched for Chase Blackburn-- yes the same guy the Giants let walk this offseason. He's not lighting the world on fire right now.

You don't start making desperation moves in that kind of hole, IMO. You make the team prove they deserve help. Otherwise you just admit defeat and try again later.

Probably a wasted draft pick... especially if Beason doesn't have many years left on his contract.

I'm sure the Giants are at this point just thinking they have to do something so ok let's try this.

I hope the trade is a big fail but I get why they would do it.

I actually think it will be. They haven't had much luck bringing in LBer talent since Reese stepped in. Their only success was probably Boley.

As far as veterans they picked up go:
Keith Rivers: last year was good for one game, and has disappeared since (also injury prone).
Keith Bullock: didn't make an impact.

Drafting?

Jacquian Williams: Is a backup for their terrible LBers
Greg Jones: out of football
Bryan Kehl: Backup for the Commanders
Jonathan Goff: Out of football
Zak Deossie: Doesn't play linebacker anymore, he's their long snapper... so that's kind of a success?

I don't know why it's a remote possibility. They are two games off the division lead with 12 to play.

If they beat the Eagles this week, they're going to be one game back. I realize the Cowboys have the tiebreaker for now, but they are still very much in play to win the NFC East, as bad as it is.

Name several 0-4 teams that made the playoffs

How many played in the NFL East during the 2013 season?

Why would the Giants consider their season over being 2 games back with 12 to play?

i get your point but historically 0-4 teams don't make the playoffs. They have to climb over three teams to make it IMO. Right now I don't see but one team from the East but that could change. Are they out of it? No. Is it a remote possibility? Yes. They are basically three back of us. I'm not totally counting them out but they are in a deep dark hole.

I just don't agree. When you are 2 games out of the division lead with 3 months to play, your chances to win the division aren't remote based on mathematics. They could be remote because of talent on your team and/or your rivals, but your record isn't keeping you from contending yet. Not when two teams are 1-3 and the other is 2-2 and getting Manninged on Sunday.

If the Giants smoke the Eagles on Sunday and the Cowboys lose, everybody will be talking about how they are right back in the mix.

Again I get your point about the 'two'games back but you're not understanding the odds of climbing over three teams one with a two and 1/2 game lead. If 10-6 wins the East then the Giants have to go 10-2 therest of the way. 9-3 is not much more probable.

But that's my point. You might be able to win this division at 8-8 with a tiebreaker. What happened in the past isn't really relevant to the state of the division today. I've never seen it any worse.

What team in this division can't they catch if they start playing decent football?

If 8-8 wins the division then they have to go 8-4 and play ? 5 games against the East with the Dallas game likely a must. There's a reason 0-4 teams don't generally make the playoffs.

A quick Google search says only one team, the 1992 Chargers, made the playoffs after an 0-4 start.
Only 3 teams have made the playoffs after an 0-3 start since 1990. The 1998 Bills were the last team to do that.
