Kraft admits owners pushed OT vote when coaches weren't present
Posted by Mike Florio on March 25, 2010 2:59 PM ET
If it appears that the owners proceeded with a vote on changes to the overtime rule for postseason play when the coaches and other football executives weren't around to argue against it, there's a good reason for it.

It's because the owners did.

Patriots president Jonathan Kraft admitted during a Thursday morning appearance on WEEI's Dennis & Callahan Show that the owners "needed to get the football people out of the room" in order to pass the revision, per Tom Curran of Comcast Sports Net New England.

Kraft also pointed out (as ESPN's Chris Mortensen noted via Twitter on Tuesday) that the same approach was applied in 1994, when owners voted to adopt the two-point conversion option, a revolutionary change at the time.

So the vote, scheduled for Wednesday, was moved to Tuesday, while the football people were taking full advantage of the write off by playing golf.

"I think [Giants co-owner] John Mara said it best [at the meeting before the vote]," Kraft said. "He basically said, 'I'm paying my football coach a lot of money. We all are. And they should go suck it up. This is what the fans want this is what's right for the game.'"

Mara and Kraft are right. Owners own. Coaches coach. General Managers, um, generally manage. It's up to the owners to put the rules on the inside of the lid. It's up to the coaches to read the rules follow them.

As we said Wednesday regarding the ongoing complaints of Saints coach Sean Payton, he'll have a say in the writing of the rules when he buys a team.

No, we all know how commissioner goodell is in cohoots with Kraft and the patriots. How he let belicheat get away with cheating and not punish the patriots with draft picks and a heavier fine.

I think you all agree with me,if the cowboys had gotten caught cheating like belicheater-kraft=patriots did, Goodell would have thrown the book at us.

Do you remember the trade we made with the titans for pacman. Well, in the trade, goodell took away a 4th round draft choice that was agreed upon and gave us back a 5th instead. Was very good players in the 4th round that goodell stuck us with instead with a 5th rounder.

Also, do you remember, forgot who but some player was suspended but goodell let him come back early, but when we had tank johnson who met all the requirements, goodell made him wait the full penalty.

But when it comes to the patriots, goodell lets them get off easy.

Either way I think it is a good rule. All the coaches crying about needing to be prepared for it are blowing smoke in my opinion, they need to be prepared for all those scenerios anyway.

Last I checked there were 32 owners in the league. There were 32 votes. All of the teams participated in this particular vote. What does this story have to do with Kraft and the Patriots being sneaky?

Call me crazy but I hope this doesn't start a trend of "getting the football people out of the room" before important rule changes are implemented that alter our beloved game forever.

We need football people's input in the room since you know, uh, the rules are for football.

The only people clamoring for a change was the talking heads in the media. I have seen nothing that indicates the fans really cared about this at all.
