Jones floats idea of Cowboys playing in Hall of Fame game the day after Emmitt's induction

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Cowboys could join running back Emmitt Smith for an August weekend in Canton, Ohio.

Smith was selected Saturday for induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. The ceremony will be held Aug. 7 in Canton. The annual Hall of Fame game will be played the next day. Owner-general manager Jerry Jones warmed to the idea of having the Cowboys participate.

"I was enjoying Emmitt being noted, and I thought, 'I guess I want these Cowboys to go to Canton and be up there when he's there,' " Jones said. "Certainly we could make that work."

The Cowboys last appeared in the game in 1999. By playing in the Hall game, the Cowboys would have five exhibitions and would start camp a week earlier, in late July.

Briefly: Jones said he has not yet spoken with fullback Deon Anderson, accused of pulling a loaded gun during a dispute outside an Addison restaurant last week. Jones declined to comment, citing the legal process.

am i the only one who hates the hall of fame game. that is one of the most wasted preseason games you can play. you do not even want to dress any of your starters for this game to me. also starting training camp early probaly does not set well for most players.

I don't particularly like the idea of Dallas playing in it, but when it's other teams, I enjoy the game.

Since when does Jones get to decide if the Cowboys will or won't play in the HOF game? Doesn't the league decide?

I think because he is the owner of Dallas Cowboys he will have a say. I think any Big market team will have a big say in it. Especially Dallas Cowboys. I don't like the idea though. One too many pre-seasons.

Also I think you are underestimating how much influence Jerry has within the league. He was afterall pretty much the main guy in the TV deal. Probably Rooney's and Mara are the only owners who rival his influence, IMO.

Hall of Fame Game?

Emmitt Smith is going to Canton, Ohio next August. Could the entire Cowboys team be going as well?

There is a chance the Cowboys could be one of the teams playing in the Aug. 8 Hall of Fame game, an annual preseason match-up the day following the induction ceremony. Typically, the game involves former teams of some of the more prominent class members.

Having the Cowboys, who haven't played in the game since 1999 when they faced Cleveland, would make sense. That would mean Dallas would play a fifth preseason game and be forced to begin training camp at least a week sooner, if not earlier.

However, team owner Jerry Jones said he hasn't been informed of such a game.

"I don't know about that, one way or the other," Jones said. "I'm not sure what is involved there, in terms of schedule."

While it might make sense for a Cowboys-49ers matchup with Emmitt and Jerry Rice being inducted, San Francisco is already slated to play a preseason game overseas.

I think that the 49ers are playing a regular season game in London (vs. the Broncos), not a pre-season game.

Unless they are playing both a pre-season and regular season game overseas, of course . . . .

I like the idea of the Cowboys vs the 49ers!

Me too.

Also means we get to see the team back in uniform a week earlier than the other teams.

Anything to shorten the offseason.
