IRVING, Texas – Through two games of the season, the lack of a consistent running game is once again a hot topic for the Cowboys.

But team owner/general manager Jerry Jones is optimistic things can turn around.

“I see improvement in the future in our running game,” Jones told 105.3 FM “The Fan” on his regular radio show Tuesday morning. “I look at how much we’re improved in our offensive line. (Brian) Waters played good for the number of snaps he played. So Waters will be in there. That’ll improve us. I think we have flexibility with our tight ends. We’ve got some answers there … we’ll get it worked out.”

According to Jon Gruden last night on the MNF telecast, Callahan told him he hated running the ball and didn't see the point of it.

Those aren't the good we were sold.

I thought I heard that last night, but was hoping I hadn't.

Thanks Jerry, I feel Sooooo much better now..

FWIW Jerry, the "future" for the running game is a long time too late. Running game has been broken for some time now.

Great tidbit. Thanks for that.

We should note the context there, though, because it's relevant. "...if everything's a two or one yard gain..." In that case, he's got a point. If you're running for something that approaches the league statistical average per rushing play, then the equation is going to be different.

Well, what do you think Jason Garrett, .. do you agree with Jerry? Did he discuss this with you, or has he not even mentioned it yet?

Jerry, .. get out of the way.

Exactly! Why are they talking about how the running "is going to get better" and talk as if this is acceptable?
Week 3 (or later) of the NFL season is nothing to brag about when it comes to improvement in the running game. If this was pre-season game # 1...I would buy it. But dont try to feed this garbage to me as week 3 of the regular season gets started. The off season [and the pre-season] was the time to brag about how the run game is going to be much better. What a clown.

Yes, I agree context is important. But it wasnt one or two yard gains. His first year replacing Gruden.... Charlie Garner averaged 5.3 yards and as a team they were 4.3 yards. His second year, Garner averaged 4.6 and Tyrone Wheatley averaged 4.3 yards and as a team it was 4.3 as well. So, if he thought passing was more important when he had a RB averaging over 5 yards, then there are problems.

Yeah. I'd agree, if that's the context. It's hard to say, though. It's possible this was something relayed at one point in the middle of a game where the running game was getting stonewalled. Who knows? I think we all agree that there's a point where you just can't run the ball in some games. And that, if you're having any success at all, it's important to keep plugging in obvious running situations. Especially, over the course of the year you cannot just abandon the run.

right on my friend. Where I am most concerned is that they havent seemed to figure out exactly WHY the running game is so bad. I am not one that usually suggests a change of players, but Dallas might be better off with a RB that has more of a chance to break one. If it isnt working...why not try a fast smaller guy...he may have runs of: 0, +2, -4, 8, -1, +44, -1. Its not ideal, but a spark of some sort is needed.

The eternal optimist. One of the biggest reasons the Cowboys continue to chase phantom championships!
