I wanted to analyze the Cowboys history of quarterbacks a little. This was not an exhausted search so I could be missing something or have a detail wrong. But here is what I wrangled up
Pre Jerry Jones we basically had 5 main starters
Eddie LeBaron rcvd in trade for 1st and 6th round picks
Don Meredith rcvd rights for a 3rd round pick
Craig Morton 5th overall pick in draft
Roger Staubach 10th round pick after winning Heisman due to 4 year commitment to the Navy
Danny White 3rd round pick who went to competing league first
We got lucky with Danny White, although he did prove to be in the Romo/Prescott mode of never getting to a SB despite big numbers over many seasons.
Since Jerry Jones there have basically been 4 eras Aikman, Romo, Prescott and 5 years where we tried many different qb's
Troy Aikman 1st pick in draft
Tony Romo undrafted free agent
Dak Prescott 4th round pick
QB's which started 2001-2005 - Carter, Bledsoe, Hutchinson, Testaverde, Henson (had 1)
Also Kitna, Cassell and Rush had to start numerous games due to injuries
And we also had brief QB controversy type starters from 84 to 91 - Pueller, Hogeboom, Walsh
Pueller and Hogeboom were pre Jones.
Ocassional spot starts for injury- Peete, Kosar, Longely, Garrett, others
The Cowboys seem to have a history of acquiring QB's who seem to have more upside than the method of acquisition would suggest. They got Meredith in a strange way (just have to wiki to read more on that). We all know Staubach we a gem and not a 10th round talent. White was an odd case because they wanted him to punt and back up Staubach but he went to the WFL.
Then we have the Jones era. Aikman just fell in Jones lap. He bought the team in 1989 and they went 1-15 and got the first pick. But picking Aikman was not enough. Jones had to also take Steve Walsh in that weird supplemental draft that only lasted a short time and start Aikman off with a qb controversy.
He got lucky with Romo and Prescott, though thats debatable since they both suck in the post season like White. Interestingly he kept the habit of trying to find gems on the cheap. Drew Henson was great talent who chose baseball then changed his mind and with a little luck could have been the QB had Romo not come out of nowhere. Chad Hutchinson was someone who before we saw him play had some upside if he was successful in the World League. He got his chance and sucked. Now we trade for Trey Lance for a 4th out of nowhere.
Jones has had an obsession with WR during his ownership drafted so many high and signing so many big names, but qb he seems to think getting on the cheap is enough. My opinion, 81 years old or not, Jones needs to stop looking for steals and just draft a damn qb. He has had the team 35 years now and, like I said, Aikman was a no brainer and Jones wasnt even content at the time. This draft has 6 first round talents at QB. Take one.
