FRISCO, Texas – When the Cowboys face the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 12 nights, will first-round draft pick Tyler Smith be the fill-in starter for injured left tackle Tyron Smith?

"I think that's safe to say," Cowboys owner/general manager Jerry Jones said Tuesday on 105.3 The Fan.

"We've got to get him out here and get him practiced here over the next couple of weeks relative to any issue he had with a little high ankle (sprain). But we don't think that's serious enough to limit his preparation.

"Now, what is the case is he hasn't been there at left tackle. He is a rookie. But he's a first-round pick and he deserved to be a first-round pick in my mind. And so we knew – we just didn't want it come any earlier than it needed – but we knew we had to get ready to replace our left tackle and he was the pick."

Jones again expressed optimism that Tyron Smith, who underwent surgery last week for a torn hamstring, will be able to return "right in the meat of things," referencing the stretch run sometime after Thanksgiving.

But that still means the Cowboys will be without the eight-time Pro Bowler for a large chunk of the regular season. And it sounds like Tyler Smith, the 24th overall pick out of Tulsa in late April, will get the first opportunity to replace him, barring a setback before the Sept. 11 season opener at AT&T Stadium.

I was on the fence, but his speech at the opening of cowboys camp at Frisco and subsequent interview the next day at the Jerry Jones Classic has swayed me. He’s on the decline.

Has he even practiced? What's the status of his ankle injury?

A rookie that has never had any live action rep before in the NFL at the position, now has a high ankle sprained, Yeah, It's save safe bet we have another Chaz Green performance upcoming.

There is nothing safe about having a rookie at LT who has yet to practice at the position

We must remember Tyron started as a Rookie too. Just saying.

I’m not sure Tyler if he wasn’t 1st Rd pick would have even won LG starting spot.

That is theoretically true, but the Cowboys are living it in real time.

Lots of 2 and 3 TE sets in week 1. And beyond.
It’s tough to say how we’ll strategize.
We may just put him out there and see how he reacts .

We have a veteran top 12 caliber QB , solid RB and fairly seasoned OL with some starters and backups . It shouldn’t be a total collapse .

Dak is mobile . Just do some dinking and dunking and roll outs to the right. Hut hut on 2. Lol

Was addressed in interview.

I typically don't read pieces right from the Cowboys website as they are often fluff pieces.

But I decided to click the link and basically it's Dr Jerry saying he doesn't "think" the ankle is a big deal.

That's the kiss of death right there.

It is what it is and why we shouldnt really take this football franchise too seriously.
