Awesome news! It's a 5 year, $50 million extension with $22 million guaranteed. I'm 100% certain if he'd gone the free agency route we would've had problems retaining him.

Totally agree. And have you seen what teams are willing to spend on top players? This may turn out to be a bargain.

With the way the cap is skyrocketing and projected to skyrocket in future years, getting a guy early is critical.

Glad to see this is taken care of. Gotta see the injury outs though

Jordan Reed Signs $50 million Extension with Commanders
Posted on May 5, 2016 by Jason Fitzgerald
Per ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Commanders have signed tight end Jordan Reed to a 5 year, $50 million contract extension. If that is indeed the base value of the contract and not an incentivized amount, Reed will now become tied with Jimmy Graham for highest paid tight end in the NFL with a $10 million per year average and a significantly higher number than the recent extensions for the Travis Kelce’s and Zach Ertz’ of the world who came in around $9 million a season.

$50 mil for a TE that can't stay on the field, seems pricey.

Good player, though. Pretty much won my fantasy leauge for me last year.

I like the player but that's a might big price tag for a guy with his concussion history. Think it's like 6 concussions now dating back to college. Not good. If healthy thought he's a very good receiving threat.

Was this before the Skins knew about the incoming four game suspension or after? :muttley:

Wonder what Striker44 feels about this? Likely vet min+incentives at best...

I think he's a great player if he stays healthy. I am always confused when Niles Paul is in the discussion as a valuable TE or somewhere near as important as Reed. Paul is horrendous. Can't block to save his life. Reed is a real problem to defend against. I fear this signing more than the Josh Norman signing given the high rate of injuries at the CB position compared to the TE position. Of course, having our safeties not named Byron Jones defend against anybody is going to make them look like a Pro Bowler.

Niles Paul is a better blocker than Reed (who tends to get called for holding too much when he does actually block lol). Paul also had a bit of a breakout year in 2014--had the 7th most receptions by a TE and the 3rd most yards through the first 4 games, while only starting one game in that span. He put on some muscle last offseason and from all reports was impressing everyone. He was seen as a better all-around TE than Reed at the time, plus Reed was nursing injuries, I think. So at that point Paul was also seen as more reliable (it may have also lit a fire under Reed's *** having Paul named starter over him, I dunno).

Paul is nowhere near being seen as dangerous while Reed is ridiculously so, but he can be more than effective as long as he comes beck from his injury at 100%.

Big contract for a good TE albeit with a bad attitude and has issues staying of the field.
