Romo: We Need More Toughness

As has been mentioned before, the Cowboys weren't as good as they would like to be in the red zone last year, 52 percent, ranked 14th in the league.

Combined with missed field goals, the goal-to-go struggles were part of the reason the offense finished second in the league in yards, but only 14th in total points. We can talk about all the weapons the Cowboys can spread the ball around to, and managing the play calls differently and everything, but Tony Romo has a much more simplistic answer. And simple is usually correct.

"What's the word I'm looking for," Romo wondered out loud Monday. "Almost the extra . . . toughness. For the extra yard or two. I'm not talking about handing off at the one and getting in the end zone. I'm talking about a guy going into it at the one and taking two hits and getting in. Or me getting that extra first down in the red zone just by half a yard or something that allows us to get another set of plays or get in the end zone instead of getting stuck at the three, kicking a field goal.

"A lot of it's just the wherewithall where you are, and to give it the extra effort to get to that point. Sometimes you've got to lay your body on the line, but that's what we're trying to incorporate this offseason is to do everything you can to get that extra yard down there. A yard is a lot down there, and it matters."

I was one of the folks who was critical of what I perceived as Romo's 'just one of the guys' approach a few years ago.

I had hoped that he would grow into the leader of this team.

It's great to see that he's done that - in spades.

He has become the player and leader that I had hoped he would.

Less cuteness and more smarts from the offensive coordinator would help also. On one hand we blamed players for not executing, but on the other hand, if plays are not called to take advantage of the team's strengths, or if too many predictable plays are called, execution is handicapped from the moment the play is called in the huddle. That **** has got to stop.

Not to pick-nits, but you were worried about nothing. Romo hasn't done anything more than follow the trajectory he was on all along.

He might have tread more carefully b/c of some of the personalities we had on the team at the time, but he's been the same guy that lead his teams since he was a kid. It's not like his personality changed because JJT and Calvin Watkins wrote a nasty op-ed piece in 2008.

Sorry, but I disagree.

I see much more leadership from Romo.

And I don't pin all of that on Owens.

Instead I give Romo credit for stepping up.
