Ellis was having a discussion with a fan on the Lunch Break today and threw out the idea of this:

If Earl Thomas and Mike Iupati were both on the board at #27, you could draft one of them, and then use your next year's 1st round pick to get the other player. This would allow us to select both Iupati AND Thomas. Now I'm not saying I'm in favor of this, but it's very interesting, especially considering how there may not be NFL football in 2011 (God knows we hope not).

Don't bash me too hard, I'm just reporting what was said on the show today, but I'd like to hear your thoughts and opinions on the scenario.

Lets say we pick Iupati at #27, then we make a trade with the Colts and give them our 1st and 3rd next year to draft Earl Thomas. It's a lot, I know, but hey it's a slow offseason and I thought it would be worth talking about. Fire away!

Yes 2011 will be a weaker draft and they should be drafting lower than 27.

If the thought process is your 2009 class 'redshirted', and you expect a number of those players to be contributers now, why not do it? Teams are hesitant to deal future number 1's, but you'd be getting them both in one class in this instance. Maybe, above all else, that pick is at or near the bottom of the round in 2011.

We would probably have to give up our second this year and a first next year to pull off such a trade. Future draft picks just don't have as much value.

I'd take Iupati, see what happens with Thomas and manuever to getting Nate Allen.

this

and i still do it my guess is if they are both there at 27 then it is because of the deep draft and both players are better than any safety or gaurd in the first round at the same slot or lower(which we project to be) next year.

I think I'd do it. Tired of drafting down and waiting on the next year, or loading up on middle rd picks. We're a damn good team and our window of opportunity is right now.

I usually hate trading 1sts, but if this scenario were to happen I would be more than happy to do this.
