Peers tab Hamilton as TSN Player of Year

Josh Hamilton's peers took notice of his great play in 2010 by voting him The Sporting News Player of the Year.

The Rangers slugger was among those decorated by the magazine, which announced the winners of its yearly awards on Wednesday. Voting for the honors was conducted by Major League players, coaches and managers.

Despite missing a month with two fractured ribs, Hamilton led the big leagues with a .359 average, cracked 32 homers and drove in 100 runs in the regular season. He also led the Rangers to their first American League Championship Series appearance.

Hamilton dethroned Cardinals slugger Albert Pujols from the top spot in the voting. Pujols won the award in 2008 and '09.

"What a great story Josh was this season," Pujols said in a statement announcing the awards. "He was a guy I always knew had the talent. There aren't many guys who can steal 30 to 40 bags, get you 40 home runs, hit .350 and have a plus, plus arm. Those guys are tough to find, but he is one of them."
