Josh Thomas Question

First off, I'm a Panthers fan just popping in to ask a question about our recent signing of Josh Thomas. I know you guys have been tweaking your defense this offseason and was curious to see the opinion/consensus on the guy. Was he more of just a casuality due to Newman & Jenkins salaries or did he just under-perform and never really stand out?

Its been hard to find info on the kid so any critique would be appreciated.

Btw, I definitely see Dallas taking the division title this year. Giants are gonna struggle a lot and I see Coughlin getting fired at year's end, the Skins are, well the Skins, and Philly will have to not only live up this crazy hype...but Vick has to prove last year wasn't a fluke. I really liked what I saw before Romo got hurt last season on offense and I think Felix Jones will break out this year. Here's to a good season for y'all

He didn't really underperform at all. Good young player with a lot of upside...we tried to sneak him through to the practice squad but looks like your scouts were paying attention.

I'll definitely be watching him in Carolina this year. I think you guys got a good one on your hands - be excited!

Also, :welcome: to the Zone.

I'm not sure if he "underperformed" because I don't think the expectation were too high. What he didn't do was stand out enough to force the Cowboys to keep him on their roster.

FWIW, one local guy (Matt Mosley) tweeted and said the Cowboys "were sick" they couldn't sneak Thomas onto their practice squad.

While we have you here, what's the word on Everette Brown? Why did the Panthers give up on the 2nd rounder from 2009? He wasn't completely unproductive ala Aaron Maybin, so I'm wondering why they cut ties.

He showed pretty well early in camp. Never really stood out in games and then tweaked his hamstring which kept him out of the last game. Was definitely a guy they wanted to keep around on the practice squad. He was considered a pretty tough cb in the run game with decent speed.

Yeah, I would have loved to keep Josh Thomas around for at least a whole off-season, because he really looks like he has the physical skills and the temperment to be an NFL CB. But he's not ready. If the Cowboys thought they could take him active to the game, there's a good chance he'd be on the 53 instead of either Ball or McCann.

I'm glad Mario Butler made it to the PS.

Everything above is right on. Thomas made a few nice plays but didn't seem to progress much. Mario Butler, an UDFA, seemed to really progress as the preseason went on. He progressed enough that I thought he had surpassed Thomas. Thomas certainly has some talent and if your team was really hurting for CBs, you sould feel fine about picking him up. He isn't going to light it up right away but if given some time he could be a nice solid player.

Thomas was one of my pet cats this year, so I obviously don't like losing him. I think he's a tough, physical player who should at least be a quality nickel cornerback and a good special teams player. Lacks speed. That's the big drawback. But he loves contact.

He had the misfortune of getting hurt at the wrong time and lost out in the numbers game. But of all the players we cut he's the one I most wish we'd kept.

And aren't the Panthers first in the waiver order? Shows how coveted he was around the league. The guy should have never been released. Doesn't make sense to use a 5th round pick on a guy and cut him after a few weeks of camp and a couple of preseason games. No OTAs, no mini camps, not even a full slate of preseason games.

Everette Brown had a problem being coached to do anything more than simply spinning to the outside and relying on his speed. People constantly made fun of him as a ballerina haha. He's a type who's college play greatly overhyped how his true abilities would translate into the NFL imo

If the owner/GM actually knew what he was doing and didn't keep two kickers or keep Holland and Young only to cut them the next day, I suspect the guy would still be a Cowboy. Per Mosley today the Cowboys are sick they lost him. Nobody to blame but yourself Jerrah.

Everette Brown
Combine:
HT: 6'1-1/2
WT: 256
40: 4.65

He is small for a 4-3 DE. He will probably get picked up by a 3-4 team to play OLB.

I can totally see that happening

Holland was replaced by the new FB. Young was cut for Dockery. Neither had anything to do with Thomas.

Truth is, he was the #6 CB on a team that kept 5 CBs. Enough with the hand wringing - he didn't do enough to justify keeping him.

Might have been the 7th. (Butler)

I am really upset we let him go. I thought he had the perfect skill set and body to make a really good nickel corner. I think this guy eventually becomes a solid #2 starter in the league.

I'd much rather have him on the roster than that kickoff specialist.

Without a moment of hesitation.

What can you tell us about the fullback we picked up from you guys (Fiametta)?

Even worse.

This is like Matt Moore all over again. I hate it when Dallas releases future all pros and HOFs.

The kickoff specialist will have a greater impact on the D than the #6 (or #7) CB on this team. It's not even a close call.

I don't agree. The difference in impact from the regular kicker, Bailey or whoever, and Buehler will be minimal if any with kickoffs moved up this year.

Give me the extra DB in the fold. Not just to help out this year but to keep that player on the roster for future years.
