Not really as knowledgable on certain defensive packages the cowboys put out at times, but does anyone know what defense that was where Dallas had Lewis shadow kamara and ingram?

And why dont we use it much? Was it just a gameplan for the saints? Would it be effective against other teams?

I always thought that set was really impressive but I never see it like that anymore.

It would be effective against some teams that have shifty backs who are deadly out of the backfield, but I wouldn't use it against the Rams. Not because Gurley isn't a great pass catcher, he is, but I'd be concerned about Lewis being able to bring him down or really slow him down effectively. I trust Vander Esch or Smith in that role a lot more.

I agree. Gurley lacks the lightning quick suddenness that Kamara has and Smith or Vander Esch should be able to cover him adequately, while providing better run support.

I could see going to a dime package and putting Lewis on Gurley in third and long situations though. Lewis is a good tackler for a corner but you wouldn’t want him coming up to enforce the run against Gurley on an every down basis.

I’d sprinkle it in in passing situations.

I just looked them both up and I'm dead shocked that Kamara is 5'10", only 2 inches shorter than Gurley. Watching them play it looks so much more like Gurley is a tall Dickerson-esque runner while Kamara is a taller Sproles. I guess style creates that illusion!

I just looked them up also and it seems Kamara would be more in Jordans ballpark to tackle a few than Gurley, so it makes sense.

I believe Lewis trying to tackle Gurley may end up turning into the situation last year vs raiders when awuzie got run over by marshawn lynch (scared me half to death).

It makes sense but I still like that set.

Huh, I have a different memory of that tackle. I expected Marshawn to run over Awuzie and pick up the first down, whereas Awuzie forced him out (though he definitely landed on the ground), bounced up and prevented a first down.

I don't think Marshawn got an inch after the contact.

EDIT:

Here's the play. I do remember conversation about Awuzie getting trucked, but I also remember that Marshawn went no further than the contact.

Pretty sure it was Dime with Lewis in man on Kamara. Especially on 3rd downs.

It was used because Kamara is used so often as a WR for them, so they manned him up with a CB.

We'll be in Nickel most of the game. We could man up with Gurley on third and longs, which is where we'll use Dime. Dime is a pass defense alignment (takes out LB, puts in DB), so you can't really use it on early downs.

Gurley is also like 15-20 pounds heavier and more physical than Kamara. I mean, if it's pass defense and you're just trying to cover the safety valve option in Dime, Lewis might work. I think Goff probably holds onto it, if its 3rd and long and he sees Gurley covered.

It will be interesting to see what they have planned for 3rd downs.

It was just a dime package and they counted Kamara as a WR.

So if they were in a 3WR package with Kamara, Dallas just treated it as a 4 WR package.

I agree. Last years game we were literally dominating. Once Sean Lee went out. Gurley took over. Smith and the Wolf hunter will hopefully be able to keep Gurley bottled up. IMO if you stop him, this game should end in our favour.

Maybe if we were to play the Bears, we might do something similar against Tarik Cohen, a small shifty quick back that catches passes and lines up across the formation. It was just a variation of the spy concept, except this wasn't for the QB. It's usually a LB spying a QB or RB, but with Kamara's skillset and the way he lines up in multiple positions it was a DB that was the better choice.

He didnt get completely run over but he still took a bang that could have ended up being worse than what it was.

Especially a shot to the neck area like that.
