I got to attend one of the training camps last year as part of my scouting internship. I was given on-field access by the team.

I'm a DB guy so I gravitate towards the DB workouts. The Safeties and Linebackers were grouped together for several drills. The two players who stood out to me were DeMarvion Overshown and Juanyeh Thomas. Special athleticism and very instinctive players. Their movement skills separated them from their peers.
Great info nugget. Thanks for sharing! GO COWBOYS!

So another player with "potential".

That and $6 will get you a cup of coffee.

Seen so many of these types of guys come and go.

If he plays up to his potential, I'll give him all the props. But I've run out of hope for "potentially" great players, do it or get off the pot, as they say....
From UDFA to practice squad to blocking a field goal that led to a TD in his first NFL game; what part of all that don't you see that he isnt progressing or showing his potential?

Dont get me wrong, i understand your frustration. Dallas, as well as every other NFL team has had its share of "busts" and let downs. But you know, thats part of the intrigue. The drama, if you willm that goes with being a DIE HARD fan. This very drama is what keeps us hooked, like a great soap opera/ TV show.

Where I say he's not progressing, and did you not see that I said he had potential?

But I get it, one play in a game and he's All Pro, baby!

I hope he does well. I have always said that I'll give anybody a chance. Same goes with Thomas.

But that's a far cry from becoming a starter, being All Pro, being a top member of the team, etc. I only said that I reserve judgment for when he gets there.

What is he, a relative of yours? Lol....

Nope. Im just a fan. I typically give every player a chance. 3 years, like the Tuna used to say.

McCarthy sees the trajectory of Thomas, and all that fuels it.
"I thought he made a big jump last year," he said of the 23-year-old who climbed from the ranks of the practice squad not so long ago to potentially being a full-time starter in 2024. "He's been dynamic on special teams and what you want, particularly this time of year, is to see young players in a different light. And Juanyeh just has so much personality. He's such a bright light.

We all seen his improvement. One of the good things to look for this season.
Lol....the kiss of death. Just like #4. He will be lucky if he makes the final cut. Hate when a coach gives a player this kind of endorsement...that didn't play hardly last year.

Ok, last year was his worst year here
You were right originally. Kearse played well in 2022.
Got hurt late in the year. In 2023, it seemed like that injury took something out of him. So, you're right on both counts. '23 was his worst year here.

I look at what Zimmer did with Harrison Smith and other safeties in Minnesota. The Vikings always seemed to have a solid group of safeties. It seems he begins here with a guy already on the right trajectory.

Zimmer didn't just stumble into a talent wasteland. He's got some good clay to begin molding the kind of defense the Cowboys need.

Now that I am much older I can only set the bar with higher magnitude exploding diarrhea.

I won't go an automatic 3 years, 2 at most. Sometimes you can tell nearly right away, like with Bobby Carpenter, that the player is in over their head.

But we'll see.

its time to put all that upside and ability to the test. Football isn't a feel good sport. Its a results based business. We gotta see that ability on the field for it to matter. I like how he has improved, but its now or never for him. Maybe thats unfair, but its the nature of the beast. All the good happy feelings and promise in the world is meaningless without works on gameday. Just win ball games,THEN we can circle back and see how Juanyeh helped us. Until then, its just another puff article we see every off season.
he's already done that. he's looked good, then played well, contributed and the trajectory seems to be continuing. that's reason for excitement, not cause for celebration. let people enjoy things.

you described potential as worthless and needing to see results. he pointed out the results we have seen, and you jump to all pro and top member of the team. you're also able to immediately identify busts? do you see how contradictory all of this is?

I agree, but I don’t at all see how this defense is supposed to stop the run in the middle….at all.

They are an injury or two away from literally playing street guys there.

If this team makes a deep playoff run with this DT room it would be one of the most stunning accomplishments I’ve ever seen. And that’s with me expecting Mazi to be at least a little better.

They are soft as can be inside, and that may work when you can go up by three scores on Washington or NY, but we all know the ending.

Im not trying to piss on anyone’s day, or be negative (trust me I’d much rather be discussing how all of our stud DTs work in the rotation), but I’m being real about it. I just don’t get it.

No, I didn't describe potential as worthless. You missed my point entirely. As far as needing to see results, doesn't that apply to everybody who gets on the team, be it a first round pick or an undrafted player?

The definition of potential: latent qualities or abilities that may be developed and lead to future success or usefulness
And: having or showing the capacity to become or develop into something in the future

Potential doesn't help the Dallas Cowboys much.. Actual performance does. Until Thomas gets on the field and makes (more) plays, he's nothing but a wish and a prayer.

My pointwas that we've seen other players with potential who didn't pan out. Many more than did pan out. I have just run out of getting all excited about a draftee or free agent signing or walk-on player, tired of the many disappointments when they never amounted to much.

If you can get all excited about those kinds of players, great for you. Wish I could do the same. But after 55 years of being a Cowboys fan, I'll look at guys like Thomas any way I darn well please. If you don't agree, then fine, you're entitled to your opinion the same as I am.

that's cool. i get being reserved. we've got a solid track record with udfa's, he's already contributed to the team (led them in special teams snaps and obviously blocked a fg) he's someone who's just done whats asked, when asked and everyone speaks highly of and the current praise seems in line with what we've seen is all. feel how you feel of course, same as those of us who feel differently.
