If he is not fit to stand trial, how come he asked his friends the night before the shootings to "please don't be mad at me?''....
I have seen crazy in my life..crazy will eat his own excrements and will harm himself.
Crazy does not know what time it is and planning is not part of crazy nor incompetent.
Loughner is nowhere near crazy nor incompetent.

They will use this case as an excuse to usher in stricter gun laws....think about it.

Basically says even if he is found that way (this article was prior to the announcement) that he could later be found competent.

====

Could be a case where the guy could get on some medication and then go to trial later.

I was just going to post this.

Basically, they just want the guy to understand the actual proceedings.

If they get him stable and fit to stand trial he'll go on trial, get convicted and likely be disposed of.

This doesn't mean he gets to spend the rest of his days in nut house.

No surprise that some judge found him incompetent to stand trial. Most people saw this coming. Although, there were some here at the this site who thought he would fry. No chance. It would be nice if the politicians changed the law and allowed the death penalty even for certifiable nutjobs. No chance of that happening either.

Actually it was two independent doctors who found him incompetent.

As BP mentioned, as soon as they get him competent things will pick up right where they left off.

Was it a judge who deemed him incompetent based on the findings of two doctors?

Do you seriously think that they (whoever that may be) will ever get him competent? No chance.

You're right, the doctor ruled it based on expert evaluation.

IMO, it would be severely irresponsible to disregard two expert evaluations.

I don't know if they will or they won't get him capable of standing trial but it's not some foregone conclusion they won't.

A finding of incompetence is uncommon, and when it happens, the competency of most defendants is usually restored with treatment that often involves drugs, Professor Golding says.

...

Golding figures competency is raised, at most, in 5 percent to 10 percent of serious felony cases under the Dusky ruling that most states follow, with slight variations. “When it’s raised, people are found competent about 80 percent of the time,” he says.

Competence and the insanity defense are often confused, says Edward Mulvey, a psychologist and professor of psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania. While competence deals with mental illness in the present, insanity refers to mental illness when the crime occurred, which can be months or years in the past, he says.

+1.

He can still stand trial at a later date. They need to get him medicated so he can understand what's going on. Doesn't mean he still won't be punished for his actions.

Justice can take it's time and wait for him. Just ask the former resident of Abbottabad that's now crab bait at the bottom of the Indian Ocean.

Take a little time there to get better in your head, old painless will be waiting...

Maybe that ****** of a sheriff will finally admit that Loughner was just a nut and that there was no greater significance to his crime.

"The greatest trick the devil ever pulled, was to convince mankind he did not exist"...makes sense to me.

Mental problems,anger,but,how about evil?
Anyone mention that?
There are bad people in this world.
Loughner is not crazy,he is evil.

Think about it.
He planned it.
He asked his friends not to be mad at him.
He killed 6 and injured many more.

Evil.

So don't try him, just kill him. We all know what he did; he is guilty of killing, so kill him.

Well Dooms,I won't say the lord of darkness himself paid him a visit the night before with specific instructions, but I can certainly tell you that evil does exist and manifests itself in horrific acts like Loughner's.
