Question (submitted by West TX Bengal Fan):

Dear NFLPA Staff:

I was wondering if you could give me an answer to this question:

Since a player waived or released after June 1 can have his remaining, non-amortized portion of prior paid bonus money split into the following two seasons with respect to the prior team's salary cap management, can a former team trading a player after June 1 manage this type of prior paid bonus money on its cap the same way? Or does the team trading the player have to take that cap hit immediately?

Answer (from Mark Levin, NFLPA Director of Salary Cap & Agent Administration):

The June 1 rule works for trades as well.

We could get rid of Roy and take minimal cap hits for the next 2 years... This also could mean our search for a #2 WR isn't over yet!

Is Jerry throwing up smoke screens saying that we have a #2 in house after saying he wanted to add a "WOW" factor to the OFFENSE for months? We know that the Commanders made a hard push for Chad and Boldin and the Eagles took shots at Randy Moss and Larry Fitzgerald. Maybe Jerry is trying to sneak in on June 1st with a quick and quiet deal to land a "WOW" fator. I know the Bengals have said that they wouldn't trade Chad BUT by trading Chad they would accomplish 3 things. They would reduce their salary cap in the '08 season by $1.9 million. But would also create $4.4 million in dead cap space in '09. They will need the roster and cap space as the Bengals plain to bring 5 veteran WR's (TJ, Chatman, Holt, Gabriel, Maxwell) and 4 rookie WR's (Simpson, Caldwell, Urrutia, Logan) into training camp.
I have heard alot of Bengal fans talk about a Barber and Crayton trade for Rudi and Chad. I think it would be better for us to trade a #1, Roy Williams and Spears or Carpenter.
