drills that I have been watching this morning. Have been watching the combine ever since it was on BSPN years ago. I know they want to stretch these athletes and take them to their limits and so on. But to me there is a lot of wasted time on a lot of these drills.
They have the OL working the three cone and a couple of others where one they have them starting flat on their backs. I hope the teams are smart enough to weigh the various drills so as to what is actually relevent to what the players will be doing in the game.
To me an OT will be doing two things 90% of the time they are playing - not on special teams. They will be backing up blocking for their QB or firing out and blocking for their RB. Less then 10% of the time will they be pulling or doing anything else. Many of these drills are only relevant in the doing of something else. So are they putting too much emphasis on what that little bit of the time in games they will be doing? I hope not.
Looking at that Veldheer kid I am warming up to him again. Very good agility for someone 6'8". He is light for his height at 312; but I can see from his build that he has not done a lot of weight training- no surprise coming from a tiny place like Hillsdale- probably barely have a weight room, let alone real trainer. His upside as regards strength increase and the like I think might be pretty high. Its not like he has gone to a major school with a top weight training program so that there is probably not a lot more a pro program can do for him. Pouncey seems to be an example of that coming from Florida, and only weighing in at 305. Veldheer could clearly put on another 15 lbs or more easily and get stronger- and his bench was pretty good already. I am betting that bench training is probably about all he could do with any real results at Hillsdale. Get this kid with a top guy and equipment and he could possibly really grow. He has the long arms and agility - his footwork looked good. Will be really interesting to see what all the scouts have to say about him.
