Just a few wonders

I am actually really honestly starting to believe all the change the Cowboys could make this offseason will be for naught if changes do not involve a new GM. Having said that though, I wonder...

I wonder if Tony Romo likes being the QB for the Dallas Cowboys anymore. Would he like to give it a go somewhere else? If so, would he be willing to accept a modified contract that absolves the Dallas Cowboys of some bonus on the grounds that he be traded. I am not a capologist and therefore I really don't know if that is something the Cowboys could do, but I do know that I would rather see the next Dallas QB fail miserably in 2014, then watching another season of Romo dropping back. I know it doesn't make a whole lot of sense; Romo clearly gives us the best chance to win, but if all that means is 8 and 8, I would much rather see 0 and 16. At least then we get the better draft pick.

I wonder if we can get anything for Witten, Ware, Hatcher, or any of the other over 30's. I really am sick of this core of players. Tired of looking at them. Sick of hearing their proclamations at the beginning of the year about how this year will be different. I said this in another thread, but I am more a fan of the Cowboys uniform than the players they are actually putting in them now more than ever.

I wonder how long it's going to take for the Cowboys to get out of cap-hell and if Jerry will ever stop renegotiating deals to create new hells for the near-future.

Honestly, Jerry Jones is writing a blue print on how to take an organization with a rich history of winning and a huge fan base and turn it into the polar-opposite. This team is losing fans by the week. I would quit watching if I could...I just can't do it.

I wonder who the scapegoat is going to be this year. I have a feeling it's going to be Bill Callahan. And maybe Monte Kiffin, too...but I doubt it.

I wonder if Jerry Jones is still able to muster excitement in the fan base for 2014. I mean, seriously, how many changes could he possibly make given the cap situation that would get the fanbase interested again? For me, I can tell you it's going to take more than just a few players. For the exception Selvie, you could scrap that entire line. And I get that Hatcher is having a career year, but how many more of those do you guys think he has in him?

Just a few wonders...flame away!!!

A lot there but I'll take issue with only one thing... Hatcher had a career first half of the season... Lately not so much

Just guessing but probably because enough guys got hurt and Ware has deteriorated so badly that he is getting the double teams now.

I'm starting to think Jerry needs to step down as GM or it doesn't matter who our coach or QB is. I was watching ESPN and they were talking about how the Ravens have a "winner's mentality" and that everyone is expected to step up when needed, not just one or two guys. It made me think about Dallas and how anyone, not just one or two guys, can screw up at any given time. Romo does screw up. Sure, he has a 100+ passer rating but throwing your one and only pick at the worst possible time IS screwing up. Some people can't accept that. But it isn't only Romo that screws up. How many costly drops has Dez had? How many costly false starts has even the great Tyron Smith had? Scandrick has been playing great, but boy can he made some awful plays. The only people I can't remember having ever costed us big time are Dan Bailey and Dwyane Harris.

I fear the only thing we can get for those players is cap space.

Bonus money that has already been paid to Romo can't be undone even if Romo wanted to somehow lower his contract. It is basically impossible to cut or trade him in 2014 or 2015.

No team would take Ware's contract which makes him untradable.

Hatcher will be a free agent.

Witten's contract is a reasonable 5M for 2014 and he plays almost 100% of the offensive snaps. He might have some trade value but it would be a mid to late round pick.

Ugh. That is depressing. Of all the over 30's I wouldn't mind still seeing in a Cowboys uniform, Witten tops the list.

I'm afraid those guys would actually hurt the cap more than help the way their contracts have been designed.

No, they save 7.5M on the 2014 by cutting Ware or 12M if they wait until June 1st.

They save 5,.5M by cutting Austin on June 1st.

I don't think we could give Austin away, much less trade him, but I'd bet there would be a few teams interested in Ware. Do we save the same amount of cap by trading him?

That is the way a lot of teams operate in todays NFL.

We'd take a hit, but we'd actually "save" about 8 million by releasing Ware. Austin and Witten would be roughly a wash, unless we did a June 1 deal.

Keep Witten, the rest can go. Witten has played hard here his entire career. He's the most clutch guy we have. I true pro. Since he was drafted no other Cowboy has played like him for as long as him.

Yes. A trade has the same effect on the cap a cut.

It's highly unlikely that any team would pay his salary and even more unlikely that they would give up a draft pick for the right to pay his salary. If a team were to sign him after he is cut, then they could pay him a much lower salary.

The reports of cap hell are overblown.

They have actually been improving the cap issues since Garrett took over in 2010.

They could cut Ware and Austin immediately and have no dead money in 2015 for the 1st time in many years. Dead money is the biggest problem for cap management. They can work around big contracts for active players but dead money is a more difficult problem.
