I'm cool with this as long as there's a least a THREAT of a running game. When teams know we're one dimensional that's when we'll get beat playing playoff football.

I agree, I not so much want them to abandon the run game as much as I had just found this article interesting & wanted to share. If we could get a healthy 10-14 pt lead & then control the clock with the run & short passes (while continuing to put points on the board) I'm all for airing it out until we are in control of the game

By running the rock more efficiently, the Cowboys will be able to do more of what they do best: spread the field and let quarterback Tony Romo chuck it around. As has been the case since Romo started his first game in Dallas, that gives the Cowboys the best chance to win.
Very interesting article thanks for posting it.

I think where Dallas gets hurt is in its play selections early in games. You can count on one of two things: Either a first-down run call or a second-down run call. Rarely does Dallas ever seem to open with passes on first and second down, or back-to-back runs on first and second down. So really the only guessing teams have to do is whether the first-down call is going to be a run or a pass. The second-down play is then a given, and third down mostly depends on down and distance (anything over third-and-2 is most likely to be a pass).

So what I'd like to see from Dallas is either opening with back-to-back runs, or running a run-fake on first down and following it with a second-down pass. Then rinse and repeat a few times before mixing in pass-run or run-pass pattern on the first two downs.

It's almost weird to me that Dallas is doing a decent job of scoring on its opening possession despite its predictable play mix.

I stopped reading at this part

"Yes, there are a million stats like “The Cowboys are 20-1 when they run the ball 35 times” or “Dallas is 2-20 when Tony Romo throws the ball more than 40 times,” but that’s only because teams that are already winning run the ball and teams that are already losing must throw it."

The common denominator in those 2 stats = running the ball. All I need to know.

Just airing it out will get us an embarrassing early first round exit.. Best case scenario. . I suppose if we appreciate mediocrity, that type of result can be chalked up to yet more "incremental progress". I call it more bull crap.

I have no problems with "Air" ball , as long as we have a semblance of running game, setup the pass to run occasional , keep the defense guessing. Whatever works , to get the ball moving and defense guessing, pass to run and run to pass. but just one dimensional will not work.

It's been always written pass blocking is not easy and all lineman prefer run blocking where they get to bury the defender instead of waiting for them to attack , but our offensive line'a run blocking is atrocious, why is it? Scheme or personnel or coaching?

Only it's obviously not.

I think some people have the perception that "airing it out" mean bombs to Dez, Williams, Witten, etc. In reality, it's a bunch of 5-10 yard dump offs and curl routes. Giving Romo the greenlight to pass it 50 times every game doesn't mean the offense is going to be fireworks night in and night out, it just means instead of runs, we'll replace those short gains with short passes - which is fine.

It's not a fix and it doesn't get at the heart of the problem, which I'm starting to think more and more is just terrible offensive scheming in addition to a terrible offensive line that the QB doesn't trust.

If Romo is going to start throwing the ball 50 times a game, get ready for more turnovers and more footage of Romo getting blasted by unblocked defensive players.

If we're going to air it out 50 times a game lets hire Mike Leach.

At least he knows how to coach it. ;)

5 - 10 yard dump offs are fine (when they are actually caught), but then Romo gets accused of being a dink and dunk artist. We want it so many ways with this guy it seems. The offensive line excuse is slowly rearing its head, when earlier in the season it was seen as an improved unit. Amazing how the reputation declines amidst the adversity of a football season. Smith, Leary, Frederick, Waters and Free are pretty young, minus Waters so if they fail to get significantly better soon, I don't know how this team gets to the point where it can win 11 - 13 games, which will net home field advantage more times than not.

Didn't that happen in the Denver game? Had a 17-7 lead that turned into a 35-20 deficit because we keep airing it out! Aired it out so much, our defense was gassed. Happened vs SD too. Anyone suggesting that we need to air it out, hasn't really been watching us closely. That's all we do is air it out, so much so quite often run plays are thrown quickly to WRs without anyone knowing but our "air it QB" and maybe a WR. That play often goes nowhere also.

Airing it out has us where we are today, 5-4 and staring at 7-9 or 8-8. Might back door ourselves in only to get spanked by a real team. This will lead to more hope sold by Jerry and Stephen about the direction of this team and his palace will be sold out again based on fools gold. Backing in the playoffs is not progress, it's a marketing tool for Jerry.

Airing it out is not the solution not matter what type of secondary the defense has, Romo has found a way of keeping teams in it with the air it out approach.

Run the ball and run the clock out before Romo makes a mistake or keeps the defense on the field too long with his inconsistent passing attack. Keeping the clock running is our best approach at winning and that happens more when the rock is being run.

Romo is always given the luxury of air it out til he hits a HR even after he's sacked or picked off but let one or two negative runs happen and it's Jason garret panics (and romo and Callahan)!!! It's time to give the backs a chance to hit a couple HRs after a few negative plays in the run game!

Anyone with two eyes and half a brain can see our offense is struggling with no running game.

This article is worthless.

Well, I'm convinced. It was the part about the two eyes and half-a-brain that really turned me around.
