Just asked a 49ers fan about the non-call on Deion in the 1994 NFC Championship

We post on an OKC Thunder forum. Nice guy from Florida that is somehow a huge 49ers/Thunder fan, really respected and knowledgeable about sports. You could say he is that forum's Hostile, if you will.

Anyways, I asked him about that Deion/Irvin pass interference non-call, and here was his response:

"Of course it was pass interference, but hey, it's Deion. That's the benefit of having him. If Merton Hanks or some scrub was covering Irvin there, it would have been called."

I couldn't decide if reading a 49ers fan say that should make me feel better or worse.

No one with a straight face could say that wasnt PI. Who knows what would have happened if it was called, fairly confident would have scored a td.

I watched that game again the other day. Blatant PI but Deion could get away with it in those days, Wasn't the first time and lord knows he was still doing as a Cowboy.

Cowboys would've won that game if the ref makes that call no doubt about it. The momentum would've been way too much for Steve Young to handle in that moment. Young had a lot of pressure on him in those days trying to replace Montana and he was on the hot seat because he couldn't beat the Cowboys and get to a Super Bowl.

IMO that game was the most important game in Steve Young's career and he probably doesn't get in the Hall of Fame without that win.

That play has to rank up there all-time as a missed blatant foul in a big spot. It was The Hichens foul but worse, with a Super Bowl berth on the line.

I took some screen shots of that Hitchens play as I was heading back home to Detroit last week. I was preparing to pull out the evidence. After viewing those pictures, I feel that it was the right call. Thankfully my friends from Detroit said nothing about it. Lol.

Horrible call, but Dallas shouldn't have put themselves in a 21-0 hole in the first 8 minutes of the game, especially on the road, and especially against those Niners. The fact that we were able to fight back and get to point where that call cost us the game, proves how awesome we were......and how our poor start is what irks me far more than the bad call.

That Super Bowl was a gift from Jerry and the cowboys.

Steve young should send Jerry a Christmas card every year.

Here are some what if scenarios ...

Do we win that game even with Deion playing for the 49ers and cheating if Jimmy Johnson is still head coach?
Is the team better prepared and do the opening half mistakes still happen with Johnson at the helm?

Does Jerry Jones still go after Deion with such vigor if we win and assumed 3peat?

You would have to assume Deion might have been pursuing the Cowboys more that off season after losing to them

Yes.

Yes.

Yes. Because Jerry would do anything for that 4 straight!

Those were easy :)

It should just make you feel old. That was 20 years ago.

No lie, that play was one of the first lessons I learned in Life not Being fair.

I was 7 at the time, and thought for sure the refs would change their mind because of how blatantly bad that PI was. Never happened.

I always wondered how the game would have started off had Jimmy Johnson been the coach. It may very well have been the same because all those turnovers were very uncharacteristic of that team.
