Nick Gholson: In the Nick of Time (April 20)

Just because Jerry Jones is a “Sooey Pig,” everyone seems to think he is hog wild about having one of his kind playing for his Dallas Cowboys.
If so, why hasn’t he?
Arkansas has had 45 players drafted since Jerry bought the Cowboys in 1989.
Boss Hog batted 0-for-45.
In fact, in their whole 46-year history, the Cowboys have drafted only one Razorback — guard Jerry Dossey with the 205th pick of the eighth round in 1970. And he didn’t make the cut.
If Jerry wants an Arkansas guy so much, why did he pass up on Matt Jones three years ago?
The Cowboys had two first-round picks that year and drafted DeMarcus Ware with 11 and Marcus Spears with 20 before the Arkansas quarterback/wide receiver went to Jacksonville at 21.
Once again, this year Jerry has two first-round picks, but 22 and 28 won’t get him the Razorback he is drooling over.
Darren McFadden is being hailed as the second coming of Adrian Peterson, but Boss Hog probably can’t touch him.
A few weeks back Jerry told Fort Worth Star-Telegram columnist Randy Galloway that he’s not willing to gamble the $20 million to $30 million it would take to trade up for a top five pick.
But remember, at draft time what we hear come out of the mouths of NFL owners and coaches should never be confused with the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth.
These guys turn into Amarillo Slim at this time of year.
So Jerry could be bluffing.
McFadden, whose 4.3 speed produced 4,485 rushing yards and 40 touchdowns in three seasons at Arkansas, won’t drop below 6 on draft day.
Most think the Raiders will take him at 4. If not, the Jets, who have been wining and dining him up in New York, will surely snatch him away at 6.
The Patriots are rumored to be willing to trade down from 7 with the Cowboys, but McFadden will probably be long gone by then.
Too bad.
McFadden would fit right in with the Cowboys.
Not only would he be the perfect running back complement to Marion Barber, he has been involved in two barroom brawls the past couple of years and says he has two illegitimate children on the way.
But even with McFadden gone, many so-called experts predict Jerry will stay true to his roots and draft another Arkansas player — running back Felix Jones — in the first round.
Jones has amazing stats. His 7.6 yards-per-carry average in three years with the Razorbacks is the second-best in NCAA history. Only Glenn Davis at Army in the 1940s averaged more (8.26).
Some, however, believe that Jones got much of his 2,956 yards and 20 touchdowns only because opposing defenses were concentrating on stopping McFadden.
Don’t expect Jerry to spend a first-round draft pick on Felix Jones just because of his Sooey Pig background.
This draft reportedly has depth at running back, so he can probably find Barber a buddy on Saturday night or Sunday morning.
Personally, I would like to see Jerry wheel and deal and make a trade with the Lions for wide receiver Roy Williams.
If not, there’s another UT wide receiver out there — Limas Sweed.
Boss Hog would look good wearing burnt orange, don’t you think?
