My thoughts from Thursday’s practice:

1. And on the fifth day Tony Romo rested. Romo practiced for four straight days for the first time since 2012 earlier this week. Even though the Cowboys were coming off an off day on Wednesday, he got a rest day on Thursday. Still, don’t look for Romo to be in there too long against the 49ers on Sunday. The Cowboys could be without three if not four starting offensive linemen because of injuries. They are not going to put Romo at risk for too long.

2. Backup quarterback Brandon Weeden worked with the starters in place of a resting Tony Romo. He looked sharp, throwing a nice touchdown passes to running back Lance Dunbar coming out of the backfield on a wheel route and to tight Jason Witten over the middle.

3. Tackles Tyron Smith and Doug Free practiced today with the first time. It’s the first work for Smith in more than a week because of a biceps strain. He is unlikely to play against the 49ers Sunday but it’s a good indication that the injury is not serious and he will be back soon. Darrion Weems will start at left tackle against the 49ers.

4. Running back Darren McFadden got most of the first team reps with Joseph Randle sidelined with a strained oblique. McFadden looks fresh, fast and spry. He has nice footwork and does a good job with ropes in running back drills as well as cutting in and out of space.

This season Is going to be very good. I'm not too worried about Rb. I think we're fine.

I've always been of the mind that McFadden can play, maybe not at elite level like once thought when drafted, but still be very effective.

The question is and always will be, can he stay healthy.

Would be the same question with the back that left too. He never stayed healthy until a contract year. Both backs played all 16 games last year and both back have missed time in camp this year due to nagging injuries. I don't know what McFadden has in him, he might be great and he might suck. We will find out. But I am glad the other back is gone.

Agreed.

Sometimes players find themselves on a team situation that is just not comfortable, not right for them, doesn't fit their vision of what they thought their NFL experience would be. We certainly can say that such a circumstance would still require the player to suck it up, give 100% on every play, and be the consummate professional. But realistically, the little injuries like the ones we're seeing in camp become excuses to to rest, with an eye on staying 100% healthy for that next team and the potential for a better fit.

DMC has to feel like he's gone to heaven with this fit in Dallas. He can run behind the best OL with top coaches, great franchise, and an owner who loves him. We should see a new energy and stamina from him, as he strives to return to elite status and silence all the doubters.

But, if he can't make it here, he's done.
