1. The defense got the best of the offense for much of the day. Consider this ugly stretch that started with a sack of quarterback Romo because of a poor block by running back Darren McFadden. It was followed by a sack by defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence. Randy Gregory then got a sack of Romo. Then Romo threw incomplete to Cole Beasley and Terrance Williams before a Greg Hardy sack. Tony Romo battled back before the end of practice with five straight completions, including a zipped pass to tight end Jason Witten in front of linebacker Sean Lee.

5. Former Baylor receiver Antwan Goodley had a good day and is starting to come on after being sidelined early in the camp. He had a number of nice catches, including a diving reception from Dustin Vaughan.

6. Rookie Defensive end Randy Gregory is not letting up on what has been a strong camp and seemingly getting better and stronger. He had two sacks in practice on Wednesday, including one against the first team offensive line.

7. Cornerbacks Tyler Patmon and Morris Claiborne had good outings in what was their first day of scrutiny as they attempt to replace the injured Orlando Scandrick. Patmon had a one-handed interception of an over thrown pass from Jameill Showers. Claiborne had a nice break up on a goal line pass to tight end Gavin Escobar in 1-on-1 drills.

The one thing that could truly ruin this season would be an injury to Romo.

My vote for starting RB in whichever one is the best pass blocker.

Love it.

8. Defensive end Ryan Russell continued his role as talented whipping boy. He jumped off side during a team drill and linebacker Sean Lee went ballistic, cursing and saying get him off the field. Other defenders got in on it and Russell was replaced by Lavar Edwards.
Why do I have this mental image of Russell dragging himself off the field muttering, "Well, at least I can stay on the field."

I love how Lee is on everybody to execute their assignments. He's a leader. Now his body must allow him to lead on the field too.

Edit: Read too fast.

I get the feeling history will show Gregory should've been a top 5 pick.

And Collins too.

Its early.....real early. But it seems at the very least these guys are going to be starters if not this year then next. Jones pans out, and thats going to be a pretty good offseason. Even with the DM debacle....

And maybe, not just solid starters...maybe 2-3 All pros, etc etc...

I believe this Defensive group this year will turn a lot of heads in the NFL this season. Suspensions and injuries will cause some growing pains but I can see this group clicking on all cylinders going into November.

Who were they going against? Weems?

Doesn't matter. I love to hear progression especially from our defense. Last I heard most of our starting OL have been out for a minute. The rrserves should be handled with ease. I wonder why there hasn't been more reports like this. Regardless, I LOVE IT.

I would like to see Jenkins and Goodley get some reps at returner vs. Vikings. Both are bigger than Whitehead and just as fast. Is Nzeocha cleared to practice yet? We may need his athleticism and size sooner rather than later. And if Hitchens is not ready for first game, then Sean Lee needs to slide back inside. Not crazy about the idea of Gachkar, Wilbur or even Brinkley in the middle for 4, maybe even 5 games. Have to get the 3 best LBs on the field. Neither Wilbur or Brinkley meet that criteria IMO. Only like Gachkar at SAM for now.

But have to find a way to play Damien Wilson with McClain and Hitch out. Problem is that he can only play WILL at high level right now. So sliding Lee back to MIKE for short term so we can get our 3 best backers on the field should be considered, at the very least. Playing either Wilson, Wilbur or even Gachkar out of position for multiple games may be too deep of a hole to recover from.
