Just CHILL: Jason Garrett likes Doug Free

Clarence Hill

Ran into Cowboys offensive coordinator Jason Garrett at charity function last night and gleaned a few tidbits about tackle Doug Free and his bid to replace the released Flozell Adams as Tony Romo's blindside protector.

Garrett said Free has the makings of a quality left tackle. He said the Cowboys were really encouraged by his performance in place of an injured Marc Colombo at right tackle last year. But they clearly believe his best position is left tackle. He is athletic. He has good feet and he has long arms, which are necessary at left tackle.

Also keep in mind that this was not a fly by night decision by the Cowboys and if they didn't feel real good about Free, they would not have cut Adams.

According to another source, their decision was not just based on watching Free at right tackle in place of Colombo. But also two years of practices in mini camp, training camp and during the season as the back up left tackle going against the best pass rusher in the NFL.

He has gotten a trial by fire against DeMarcus Ware. So the Cowboys know a little about what they have in Free.

Still, Garrett acknowledged the Cowboys have been looking at tackles in the draft. He said there are several quality tackles, including many who will likely be gone when the Cowboys pick at No. 27.

One who could be there is Maryland tackle Bruce Campbell, whose play on the field does not match his off the charts size and workout numbers. Garrett doesn't deny that Campbell's so-so film doesn't jive with his measurables. But also doesn't shy away from the fact that Campbell's measurables make him an intriguing developmental prospect.

Campbell was in Dallas this week for pre-draft visit.

Will they pick him?

Garrett said he doesn't know what the Cowboys are going to do. It all depends who is available at 27 and they have no idea at this point.

Impossible, I have heard on here that Doug Free is a RT. Didn't Jason Garrett watch the Vikings game?

I think Campbell will be a good LT someday. I also hope he isn't a Dallas Cowboy but I won't cry if they pick him.

hmmm..after reading this Article you get the impression that we would'nt take the "intriuging develomental prospect" in the 1st.

I sure hope they are correct about Free, you can't play with the LT position.

A good left tackle should be able to practice and play at right tackle for weeks and then switch to the other side and shut down everyone ---Jason must have not read the analysis on here;)

I'm for Free all the way and I think he's up for it, but that doesn't mean that OT isn't a huge need.

Either one of the starters get hurt and this team is dead.

They need to come away with at least one if not two in this year's draft.

It's past time that the team made a serious commitment to the O-line.

I was very worried about Free starting, so I've been watching some games from last season to focus on Free. I'm not worried anymore. He consistently stays between his man and the qb. He may not move his man too much, but he will at least stale mate with him. All he needs is strength and if he never gets it, should still be ok.

Not that I'd blame him if he chose to hide behind the overblown laminated gameplan sheet they all have for that game, but to his nightmares for an entire week after that game, I doubt he missed it.

Of course, what does he know about football ? Just because his dad was one of the premier scouts for the Dallas Cowboys, just because he's been around football most of his life, just because he's played under at least 3 excellent offensive coordinators in his NFL career as back up QB, and just because at least 2 teams have expressed interest in hiring him as a their head football coach, doesn't mean he knows anything about judging talent.

Forget Free... What about Robert Brewster? Who is going to be our backup?

Our depth right now sucks.

Does the season start tomorrow ?

Let's wait to see what happens in the draft, let's wait to see what happens during the second round of cuts, let's wait to see what happens in training camp and if we're smart, we SHOULD wait to see what happens after the season is played ( but I know better than to make that ASSumption ) , and then let's give an educated opinion..

I never understood that argument at all.

Like Garrett said, he's clearly a LT. Why "waste" his footwork on the right side?

Thats why we have the draft and the rest of free agency.

The thought behind it is he may struggle with the quality of player he will be facing @ LT.

We didn't have to help Flo out a whole lot while he was here either. How much will that change with Douglas?
