The defense was terrible last year. Constant shuffling of players in and out of our lineup due to injury contributed quite a bit to it. This created confusion and breakdowns. We've done some things this offseason to try and strengthen our depth, notably along the defensive line. In doing so, we said goodbye to our superstar Demarcus Ware and longtime teammate Jason Hatcher. We're replacing them with guys named Melton, Lawrence, Crawford, McClain and Mincey. While none of them may be able to alter the course of a game individually, if we can get these guys to play sound football within the scheme of this defense it's going to give us a chance. It's similar to what makes Sean Lee such a team favorite. He's made a name for himself by being consistent when on the field. He may not make those freakish athletic plays that find their way on sportscenter, but snap in and snap out he's giving everything he has while playing within the system exactly how the coaches want it to be played. The thing is, you don't need superstars to have an effective defense... Especially this one. This scheme is designed to be effective by having all 11 guys playing in sync, rallying to the football, and eliminating big plays. All you need to bring is effort, an understanding of the scheme, and execution... And that's the beauty of it. Trust in the system and trust in your teammates. If we can get our defense to buy into those 2 concepts we can field a good defense. It's a young group that lacks ego and should be filled with hunger. Just do your job.
