I enjoyed the posts that actually touched on realignment in a previous thread. We all had problems with enough teams in the West.

Which got me to thinking about expansion. With 8 divisions the NFL could expand to 5 teams and 40 total teams.

Let's say they want to do this over the next 20 years. When that 20 years is up what 8 teams would you add to the current 8 divisions?

Keep the current 32 teams where they are in their divisions. What cities would you expand the NFL into? Would Canada be a target? Mexico? Europe? Want to kick Goodell in the pills for even considering the last 3?

Up to you, but where would you add 8 teams?

As a helpful tool for this exercise here is a list of the top TV markets in the US.

I'll consider my 8 teams and add them in a separate post.

LA
Oklahoma City
Portland
Las Vegas
Honolulu would be different
Vancouver
Anywhere in WV/VA
I wouldnt mind seeing a team out in Oregon either.

Whew, I didn't really appreciate how badly out of whack the divisions would be without moving any teams.

NFC East

Las Vegas, NV

NFC North
Salt Lake City, UT

NFC South
Birmingham, AL

NFC West
Portland, OR

AFC East
Hartford, CN

AFC North

Columbus, OH

AFC South
Albuquerque, NM

AFC West
Los Angeles, CA

1: LA
2: Orlando
3: Second Chicago franchise
4: Oklahoma City (Those people are dying for a football team)
5: Vegas
6: Portland
7: San Antonio (Might be tough due to the large Cowboy contingent)
8: Memphis or Birmingham

Stay away from Canada and Mexico

We need more teams out west, so here goes:

L.A. (if no team moves there)
Portland
Salt Lake City
San Antonio
Las Vegas
Albuquerque/Santa Fe (hey, I can dream)
Oklahoma City
Birmingham

Salt Lake City wouldnt work. Just like the Jazz, they wouldnt sell alcohol at the games (huge source of income). Also, the Jazz don't ever play Sunday home games, and obviously that isnt an option in the NFL. You'd get incredibly low attendence due to the huge mormon contingent refusing to attend events on Sunday. It would be a financial nightmare.

LA and Vancouver I could see as targets, but Europe and South America should be completely out of the question.

I'd probably end up with 5 new US teams and try to start competing in Canada with 3 teams:

1. Portland, OR
2. Las Vegas
3. Los Angeles
4. Salt Lake City
5. Oklahoma City

and three Canadian cities, perhaps:

6. one of: Ottawa/Montreal/Toronto/Quebec

7. Winnipeg

and

8. one of: Calgary/Edmonton

Oh. I had not really known this. Then I would take Salt Lake City out of my list and add perhaps Columbus, OH or Birmingham, AL.

we have several teams struggling to fill their stadiums now and you are talking about expansion?

Got a better subject? Let's hear it.

Would rather have silence then bother with a subject that is pointless and wrong.

Expansion should frankly be the last thing anyone spends any time on for the forseeable future.

Maybe in 5 years or so IF teams like Jackonsville and others are drawing capacity crowds. Until then it is something NOT WORTH discussing seriously.

Yes, but you don't have to.

Silence? This is the internet.

No one beat your door in and started asking you about expansion. You could easily close your browser and go stare out the window till the season starts.

Birmingham would be a great place for an NFL franchise. That is prime SEC/Alabama/Auburn fan territory, those people would show up in DROVES if you gave them a pro team.

I always thought Washington DC would be a great city for a professional football team. They should look into that.
