Just for fun... RW strategies.

To counter the bag on RW threads I thought I would throw out some strategy thoughts on utilizing RW a little differently.

Things we have criticized RW on:

1. Runs poor routes.

2. Doesn't get a good release.

3. Poor hands when pressured by a DB.

4. Lost confidence.

5. Trying too hard.

What about this:

(Works best if Romo gets the offence to the line at the 15 second mark.)

Motion into slot as hot receiver.

Start with Witten lined wide as receiver and Williams in the slot. He has to execute a few plays where he is the backside blocker on some runs. Maybe down blocker on the end for runs to his side.

When Romo sees the Eagles tipping off either run blitz or corner (that's why getting to line early is important) he calls out a hot route word (typically multiple words) and Roy releases while in motion to get a jump on the covering LB or slot DB.

Easier for RW because he as a jump on the coverage. Easy assignment because he has to run to the open zone. If isolated well he has coverage by a LB who is typically slower than a DB.

Last, but not least, when I played ball a coach once told me if a receiver is having trouble getting in sync with the QB you don't lengthen out the timing of his plays, but rather shorten them to rebuild his confidence.

Get the ball in Roy's hands in the quickest amount of time while he on the move. It's the "no time to think, just do" approach and maybe this can help get him started.

Hot plays are ideal for Romo's quick release and the distance from QB to RW will be closer so the play develops faster...similar tot he West Coast philosophy of the long hand off.

Garrett has to build a different package for RW if he wants this guy to feel like he is part of the offence. Bring him inside and outside in variation with either Witten or Phillips.

Do this early and get the offence to the line early. It's the Eagles who are on the ropes and I suspect they are going to have to gamble in order for McDermott to dispell any thoughts that the defence was more aggressive under Jim Johnson.

I think if we just keep playing offense the way we have been we'll be doing just fine. We don't need to force the ball to anybody. Whoever gets open gets the ball. Whoever is the hot read on the blitz gets the ball.

The last thing we need to do is overthink trying to get Roy going. He's a #1 draft pick who sees himself as a top tier receiver. The only thing he needs to do is catch the ball when it comes to him, and not 'get lulled to sleep.' If he goes hard every snap, eventually it'll come his way.

...RW has not been right the last three games. This takes away half of the field.

He hasn't been able to focus enough to be effective with the ball in the traditional sets Garrett has devised for him.

He feels the voices and the perceived lack of confidence from his QB and OC. He's even said so publicly.

RW being able to contribute would be a definite pick me up for this team as it marches along in the playoffs.

Last, no team plays the same formula week after week in the tournament. Wrinkles are added to the base sets to see if you can isolate match ups and explore different ways of getting the ball to your play makers.

What I propose is to look at RW similar to the way N.O. looked at Colston when he was a rookie and they drafted him as a TE.

Short developing routes with a focus on getting to the open short zone. It's not a foot race, but rather a identification challenge.

This is why a guy like Jay Novacek, who was possibly the slowest TE in the NFL with his bowlegged gait, was one of the most effective receivers for Aikman.

Marginal blocker, slow footed, but he had simple assignments. I would give RW a shot at this type of package.

Well if you listen to the lunch break and such, they seem to think the Eagles were rolling a safety over Roy to prevent him from getting slants and stuff last weekend, so if that's the case, maybe they don't do that this weekend because it obviously didn't stop the offense. If they stop doing that, maybe he gets open and gets some balls thrown his way.

If we're going to build a gameplan around a receiver, it's going to be Witten or Austin, not a guy who hasn't capitalized on the opportunities he's gotten. I don't disagree that we would benefit greatly from getting him going, but I highly doubt we're going to put our playoff chances on his shoulders by trying to build a gameplan around him.

...is not to game plan for him to win the game all by himself.

Witten and Austin will still get their targets and in their traditional areas of play, outside or slot for Austin and inside on releases for Witten.

The point of developing such a package is to make RW typical 3-4 targets more effective for him.

Do you really think that RW in motion in the slot is going to pull down a safety? I think not.

The correct call for the Eagles is to blitz the slot corner who RW is isolated on or blitz the LB on the opposite side of RW's motion while the DB has man coverage.

This will get Roy either a quick throw as the "hot" or allows him to get to the open zone a LB has vacated.

Last thing we need to do is to constantly target him in situations where a DB is in press coverage with over the top help on slow developing WR routes.

I believe Romo's going to have a lot more confidence in a flip in the middle/over the top to Roy as opposed to a long throw out to the flats or a slant with tight press coverage.

Just my gut feeling but I think Dallas will try to get RW involved early in the game if he can make some plays and get his confidence up and Romo confidence I would not be surprised to see RW have a big game. Of course I do not want to see Romo force things to RW but I do think the Cowboys will have some early plays to try and get RW involved.

Oh I think you are absolutely correct here. Since we've got the back to back games we really do need something different and getting RW involved is a major step toward getting Austin and others free.

I agree if we can get him going it will be a big help to everyone. The frustrating part is I know what he is capable of but he has to go out and do it. Me knowing and him doing are 2 different thing. Hate to steal a line from ESPN but Come On Man!!! Get it going Roy

I agree with you Doomsday101 I think RW will have a good game but also like you said I hope Romo doesn't force the ball to him. I have the gut feeling that this is the year the boys win a playoff game can't wait to see it take care.

...they need to develop a package that takes him away from the cover men. If he is matched up against players whose tendencies are more to zone he may be more successful.

line him up at OT and block, block, block

...the exception of the OT I think this is what many opinions are of him right now. A good blocker.

I think everyone would like the impression of him to be much more than just that and being a good team player.

How best to utilize Roy?

"Less is more" looks like it would be a very effective strategy.

Roy needs to talk to this guy before the game.

Perfect strategy, lets hope the Cowboys do exactly that....and put Crayton / Oglesby (rotation) in place of Roy.
