To counter the bag on RW threads I thought I would throw out some strategy thoughts on utilizing RW a little differently.
Things we have criticized RW on:
1. Runs poor routes.
2. Doesn't get a good release.
3. Poor hands when pressured by a DB.
4. Lost confidence.
5. Trying too hard.
What about this:
(Works best if Romo gets the offence to the line at the 15 second mark.)
Motion into slot as hot receiver.
Start with Witten lined wide as receiver and Williams in the slot. He has to execute a few plays where he is the backside blocker on some runs. Maybe down blocker on the end for runs to his side.
When Romo sees the Eagles tipping off either run blitz or corner (that's why getting to line early is important) he calls out a hot route word (typically multiple words) and Roy releases while in motion to get a jump on the covering LB or slot DB.
Easier for RW because he as a jump on the coverage. Easy assignment because he has to run to the open zone. If isolated well he has coverage by a LB who is typically slower than a DB.
Last, but not least, when I played ball a coach once told me if a receiver is having trouble getting in sync with the QB you don't lengthen out the timing of his plays, but rather shorten them to rebuild his confidence.
Get the ball in Roy's hands in the quickest amount of time while he on the move. It's the "no time to think, just do" approach and maybe this can help get him started.
Hot plays are ideal for Romo's quick release and the distance from QB to RW will be closer so the play develops faster...similar tot he West Coast philosophy of the long hand off.
Garrett has to build a different package for RW if he wants this guy to feel like he is part of the offence. Bring him inside and outside in variation with either Witten or Phillips.
Do this early and get the offence to the line early. It's the Eagles who are on the ropes and I suspect they are going to have to gamble in order for McDermott to dispell any thoughts that the defence was more aggressive under Jim Johnson.
