Just got back from the game, my thoughts...

First of all, it was the preseason for the technical crew too it seemed. Stadium music and sounds were cutting in and out all night, volume would get really loud then really soft, and in the second quarter the big screen went entirely black for almost a full minute.

Now, onto the game...

The starting offense looked good, though Romo did miss an open Dez Bryant and skipped a pass in front of him on his final throw. The line was ok, definitely quicker and more athletic than past years, but Romo only had a clean pocket on one of his four throws (excluding the screen pass to Felix). Tyson Smith looked ok for most of the night, but twice on the first series Von Miller blew by him and would have had a sack both times had he not slipped and fallen. Still think he'll be a great lineman for years for us once he hits his stride, though. Arkin did pretty well to my surprise, he pancaked a few guys in the second quarter on running plays and looked good blocking downfield on a couple occasions. He looked very strong and knew how to use his strength it seemed.

The starting defense was about what I expected...bad. Denver's first team offense was able to do pretty much whatever they wanted, especially on the ground. Our front seven got pushed around on their first drive. Lissemore dissapointed me, I think he got driven back on every single snap. I also specifically watched Gerald Sensabaugh and Abram Elam while they were in. Elam is a definite upgrade and looked good, but man watching Sensabaugh is a beating. He couldnt cover me. To be fair, four starters were missing including both corners, but it wasnt what you would call encouraging. Hopefully as they adapt to Ryan's system things will improve.

I hate talking about punters, but Matt McBriar is just amazing. The control he has over his punts is remarkable to me. I'm convinced you could put a three yard by three yard square on the field and he could punt the ball into it seven or eight out of ten times.

Kitna's arm strength has left him. He really looks pained every time he has to throw the ball more than 10 yards. I'd feel much better playing McGee if Romo went down again.

Bryan McCann looked good, had a great pass breakup in the endzone on a fade and put a great stutter step move on a blocking back to create pressure on a corner blitz.

Wasnt impressed with Lonyea Miller. Phillip Tanner looked MUCH better IMO.

Stephen McGee has come a long way. He really does seem to perform better when the game is on the line, going back to his two games last year and tonight.

Dwayne Harris is a PLAYER. Runs good routes and has great speed, very excited about his future.

Shaun Chapas is a good blocker, but I wonder if he has the athleticism to play at this level. He looked like he was moving in slow motion relative to everyone else. Hopefully once he gets accustomed to the speed of the NFL he will pick it up.

Victor Butler looks like he might really turn into a player, or at least a situational player. He has a great burst off the edge and is just very athletic overall. He flows to the ball as well as any linebacker we have due to his lateral quickness. However, once he gets blocked he doesnt get off them very well. Kind of hit or miss, but when he gets around the corner or in open space he can be deadly.

Nobody works harder than John Phillips. He goes 100% every snap and is always the last guy to stop moving or quit blocking. He also runs very crisp short routes, really a textbook example of a true effort guy who a decent amount of talent to boot.

Though he has no chance of making the team, Raymond Radway impressed me. He threw a couple great blocks on Tanner run plays in the fourth and seemed to get open consistently.

I too was at tonight's game and agree completely with this assessment. I also liked #54, the Cummings kid. He was in on a LOT of plays and made the first big hit on special teams. I also want to see more of #66, the Geathers kid. He flashed a little bit tonight and want to see more of him. He plays DT.

I agree with nearly everything you said...Thanks for sharing!

The only difference of opinion I have is when you said Radway has no chance at making the roster...I think he does.

Let's say we go with 5 WRs... Miles, Dez, Harris I would say are a lock. I think Ogletree is probably 90% certain to make the team, but his lack of consistency and rumored lack of dedication last season give him the off-chance of being a surprise cut...stranger things have happened. Either way, that's only four receivers. Holley is probably the favorite to get the 5th spot based on his ST play, but he was definitely outplayed by Radway tonight both on ST (but as a returner not a gunner like Holley) and also in receiving.

I think that race for the 5th spot just got a lot more interesting, and Radway could definitely pull ahead of Holley if he continues to practice well in camp and have games like he did tonight!

Funny how perspectives change from television, I thought McCann looked terrible. He got beat badly and was called out for peaking into the line on running plays.

It's worrisome that Romo was hurried on his throw again. It's like when he goes into his drops his very first decision has to be to sidestep somebody. This is a re-occuring theme that has to get worked out.

Going back to perspectives, Butler looks like he plays at a different speed.

It's early, no need to panic yet but its disconcerting that the same things keep getting mentioned.

I was at the game as well. The sound system was just awful.

I agree with most of your assessment so I'm not going to say much but add a little about McGee.

McGee looked like a real quarterback tonight. He seems to have the brains to know what to due, is always very calm, and plays well in the clutch. Many of the plays he was telling everyone what to do, and after the plays it seems there was always some reciever who ran the wrong route.

Also I always hear people talk about crowd noise and how bad it is. It seemed pretty good tonight, especially for a pre-season game, but since it was my first game I have nothing to base it on.

Also, Rowdy being back is just terrible news.

Even though Jerry Jones stated that Radway has a great shot at making this team, you seem to think that he doesn't? What makes you think that Jesse Holley or anybody else will make the team over a young talent like Radway?

I'm going to back him up and also say that I don't think Radway will make this team. But I could very well be wrong and that is fine by me.

He was clueless out there. McGee has at least 3 more completions if he runs the correct route. His routes are also not very crisp from what I could tell.

Radway did have some bad moments out there but he also showed some flashes of his potential. If Radway doesn't make it as the 5th WR, who do you have as the 5th WR and why?

Thanks for you guys who were in attendance. It's always nice to have an 'eyeball on' thread of what the senses were feeling there.

victor butler is the real deal...he looks deadly as an edge pass rusher. i could see him starting for us next year if we dont resign anthony spencer.

Sorry, man. I mean no offense to you. But, all I know is that he scored a touch down, and he has been outstanding in practice. Now, maybe he was not running the correct routes, how do you or anyone else know this from watching it on TV? He scored! Again, no offense intended.

Austin
Bryant
Ogletree
Harris
Holley/Manny Johnson (special teams, and they know the system and what they are doing)

I just don't think he has done enough yet. I'm not saying he can't make the team, just that I don't think he will. I'm all for him making the team. But he still has a lot to prove.

And of course JMO, so don't tell me I'm stupid or don't have a clue or whatever as some posters like to do. I don't know you so I'm not saying you do. Just the board is getting to the point that intelligent conversations are non-existant.

None taken. But I was at the game, and could see the whole field.

He's not going to beat out Ogletree or Holley unless he just explodes this preseason, and I doubt we keep six wideouts

I have respect for everyone's opinions. I get told that I'm stupid and ignorant as well so I definitely understand how ugly people can get when they have conflicting opinions. Now, as far as Holley/Manny Johnson are concerned, neither one of those guys have potential to be a WR. With the new kickoff rules, the impact of strictly ST players have been greatly diminished. In order to make the roster this year, I believe that you will have to impact the game more than just being a ST's player. I understand that Radway is a little raw, but the guy does show flashes of potential as a deep threat WR. Also, he is projected to be a good ST player as well because of his youth, size and speed.

IMO, Radway has more potential than either Holley or Johnson. You're right, Radway still has to show more in these preseason games, and I believe he will.

Ok, I will defer to you. I can only go by what I saw on TV. But I am just disputing the argument that he has NO chance to make the team. The guy has just as much chance as that underachieving Olgatree in my opinion. They should have cut him a year ago.

Of course he won't beat out Ogletree, but how do you justify Radway not beating out Holley? Radway is younger faster and has more potential as a WR than Holley ever will. Holley is a 28 year old punt coverage player and that's it. So again, why do you think Radway will not overtake Holley to get a roster spot?
