the cowboys guaranteed romos contract this year,

that saved 4.5 million in cap money

adam talked about ways earlier in posts how the cowboys could add some cap money, and one of them was guaranteing romo's contract this year.

Don't understand how guaranteeing Romo's contract gets us the extra cap space. I thought $30M of the first $67.5M of Romo's contract was already guaranteed. Thought we had to restructure his contract to get the extra cap room. Maybe that's what they actually did but are calling it something different. Jerry Jones used to restructure Troy Aikman's contract almost every year to get extra cap room.

all i know is that todd archer said they did something with romos contract

and adam our cap guru, said earlier in posts, to get more cap money that the cowboys could guarantee romo's contract this year, and it would save the team 4.5 million

i think thats what was done,

by guaranteeing romos contract, i think what they are saying is, no matter what, romo will get 4.5 miliioin this year, injury or not, he is guranateed 4.5 million this year,

By "guaranteeing" even more of Romo's salary this year, they can amortize that amount over the length of the contract. I don't claim to be Adam and this is a rough example, if a player was to make $6 mil in salary, and had 4 years remaining on the contract, then the club could take $4 mil of that, call it a guaranteed amount, and spread that $4 mil over the remaining years of the contract-- or in other words $1 mil per year.

cool micheal maybe that makes sense, again im not a cap guru like our good buddy Adam is, but whatever, we had to create cap room to get extensions for newman and barber;

now main thing, adam how can we get the extra cap money to sign extensions for T O, Canty and Hamlin, I dont want to lose those guys;

i do think we might lose columbo next year i think and maybe henry, but i want to keep T O for at least 2-3 years and Canty and Hamlin;

In order to get Terence Newman and Marion Barber signed to these long-term extensions, the Cowboys had to create some salary-cap room so they went to Tony Romo.

The quarterback agreed to restructure his contract, but it didn't cost him a penny. In fact, it put some money in his pocket now instead of later. The Cowboys turned Romo's $6.5 million base salary into signing bonus, dropping the 2008 base salary to $605,000.

Instead of carrying a cap figure of $8.416 million this year, Romo's new cap number is almost $3.5 million, hence a saving of about $5 million and enough room to get Newman and Barber done and then some when added to the roughly $3.5 million they already had.

Man Dan Snyder math at work...

The difference is, we restructured Romo's contract so we could sign our probowl players.... Snyder is FORCED to restructure contracts because they're always over the cap from all the dead cap space.

Yep, and in our case they are restructuring a young pro bowl qb that was going to get that money anyways.
