Just leave the ball on the ground

Why does every ball carrier, receiver, returner etc try to throw the ball to an official at the end of the play? The zebra is usually still signaling something, and can't catch the damn thing anyway.

Sorry, I'm watching the Week 11 Commanders @ Cowboys thanks to Stargazer, bitTorrent, and the good folks at ************.com. And everybody but Marion Barber is throwing the ball after every play, and I haven't seen the official on the receiving end catch the ball yet.

On a side note, Baileys and Dewars is really good on the rocks.

In truth, we used to do it to amuse ourselves at the expense of the ref. They can't get pissed because you are simply trying to be courteous or helpful.

It's good practice habit for the end of the game when they are in the 2 minute drill to score.
They can't move till ball is placed.

Psychologically it could be beneficial to be helpful

Or maybe it's just reinforcing that you never put a ball on the ground. That's why I'd do it.
