dallascowboys.com, and Wade stated several times that on defense we set a bad tone and "just didn't get after them". In fact, Wade said we just didn't get after them (or similar words) several times during the PC.

And then he said we have to get after them more - i.e., the QBs more.

From listening to the press conference, I got the feeling that Wade didn't get involved in telling B Stewart what "type" of pressure he was looking for vs. the Broncos - at least from his first unit.

I'd guess that Wade and Stewart discussed how much they wanted to play the starters, certain players, etc., but I really felt that Wade basically didn't get involved in telling Stewart if he wanted the defense to blitz every now and then, to jam the CBs and play aggressively, etc. (Wade also mentioned that the Secondary didn't cover well.)

The only reason I bring this up is that I thought it kind of strange that even though it's a pre-season game, that Wade wouldn't have communicated with Stewart if he wanted the 1st team defense to show more pressure (or not), if he wanted to do more to set the tempo with the defensive play, etc. I mean, otherwise Wade shouldn't be THAT disappointed with the results. Of course any pro starting QB is going to put up a high percentage passing completion rate if he can stand behind the pocket unharrassed.

Did anyone else come away with this after listening to the PC? (That Wade didnt' really communicate how much pressure, etc. he wanted to apply?)

I think that vs. the Texans that Wade will definitely be applying more pressure and not such a plain vanilla defense - at least that's what I gleened listening "between the lines". And even in pre-season, he doesn't want the defense not to be overly vanillia (i.e., CBs playing way off the WRs with no pass rush).

It was obvious last nite we didn't bring any heat at all. BS got hammered last year by Bronco coaches for blitzing too much during the preseason. I think BS though about that and went way too vanilla in this game. It's obvious WP didn't know about BS game plan and that's expected for a PRESEASON game. I think we'll see the house coming on D friday nite...

Yes, exactly Mansta.

I just thought it kind of strange that BS woudn't have told Wade something like "by the way, this is what I'm planning on doing vs. Denver ....", or Wade telling BS something like "this is what I want to generally see the defense do, go take care of it".

I defintely don't expect a gameplan as it's pre-season, but rather just a two minute conversation on what the HC would like to see from the defense.

Anyway, I do also think that the Houston game will more much more aggressive - from a defensive standpoint at least.

This doesn't suprise me at all. Now during the regular season, you can bet WP hands will be all over the defensive game plan but not for the preseason. Its just that, PRESEASON.

Maybe Wade was giving Stewie a run at calling the plays, setting the gameplan by himself?? It's preseason for him too...

I don't know really, just throwing things out there.

He also could have been talking about issues other than the schematics. Like the players who are supposed to rush the QB "getting after" Cutler. I saw too many plays in that game where it looked like the three linemen and our fourth rusher simply not hustling to pressure Cutler. Overall, they were sleepwalking and looked like they really didn't want to be there.

Our defense did set a very bad tone. They were relatively lazy and unmotivated. To me, that looked like more of a problem than simply not calling blitzes. We rushed four most of the time and looked horrible doing so.

My question is why can't Stewart be trusted to put his own stamp on the defense for a regular season game? It appears to me that he did here and you saw the response from what should be a unit that takes part of its tempo from him. I think that's what a defensive coordinator is supposed to do.

It is no wonder that this team looks like it has two coordinators and no true head coach. For all intents and purposes, it probably has to because Stewart simply isn't that good.

I was thinking the same thing, may be he is checking how much he can trust BS during regular season and to what extent.

Because WP is a DEFENSIVE GURU, thats why he's here. Just like Holmgren, Shannahan, and any other HC's who have a specialty, they're gonna do their thing. Don't be fooled for 1 minute and think that Holmgrens OC designs the teams offensive game plan or even calls plays. Holmgren does that, just like WP does it here.

If that game was a test for Stewart to learn how to call plays, then he failed miserably.

In all fairness, it was not just the defense that sucked, it was the whole freaking team that looked like they really didnt want to be there and were thinking about getting home. I think practicing with the Broncos all week was a mistake, the team looked burned out and was just going through the motions.

If we look like crap again Friday night against the lowly Texans, it will be time to start worrying. I know winning is not that important in preseason, but going 0-3 and possibly 0-4 is not a good way to get ready for the openner.

I think somebody needs to tell Wade that Jerry was blowing smoke when he said Wade didnt have to make it to the SB to keep his job. Yea, I am sure Jerry will accecpt a "participation ribbon" as consolation.

If I was Chris Canty, I would add this to my pitch for a new contract. 'I go out, the pass rush goes to Slobbovia!'
