OK. Unless we could get Roy Williams from Detroit there really are not many top WRs we could get without paying an arm and a leg. Berrian just does not thrill me. Maybe one of the second tier guys would be OK, as long as they have serious speed and good hands (not picky, am I?).
Yet Jerrah has maintained that picking a WR in the first is about as risky as it gets. And that is true. I think a lot of what happens will depend on two things: how the Boys feel about Stanback and what they think TG has left in the tank. Jerrah might decide to gamble for one more season with what we have. I do think an extension for TO is also coming. If we do not spend heavy on a WR I do not see us going after any big FA's otherwise. There are only 3 top CBs available (assuming strange name is not franchised by the Raiders) and Samuels wants a mint; Truffant as well, more then likely. There are no other CBs really worth serious money out there.

Therefore I conclude that we will spend the bulk of our money on sewing up our own guys. Hamlin is almost a gimme; the real question is the Hotel.
Jerrah knows we are close to winning it all and breaking in a new LT while trying for a ring is not adviseable. If the Hotel is willing to sign for say 7 Mill a year for 4 years I can see Jerrah biting; unless Houck convinces him that McQ or Free can be good enough. Canty and MB3 will be fully tendered, no doubt of that at all.

Now comes the draft: I think its pretty clear the boys will be looking hard for CBs- Reeves is assuredly gone and we need to do BETTER there for sure.
I can see both #1's going for CBs if they are there to be had. Lets face it: Henry only has a couple of years at most left anyway and when you consider the injuries of this year then getting 2 is NOT out of line. A RB to compliment MB3 can be had in the second or third pretty easily. I can see a third or fourth spent on a Center since we need better then Proctor backing up Gurode. Outside of those areas then probably BPA will probably rule.
Now as regards camp:

If we get the Hotel back then you can pencil in McQ competing with Kosier for the LG slot, and I think frankly that McQ will win that competition rather easily. Stanback will be pushed hard in camp to show something, and that will be interesting to watch. Another area of interest will be the ILB situation with Burnett pushing Ayodele. Carpenter I think will be gone to a 4-3 team that better suits his abilities. Spencer will be pushing for playing time and I can see him being used inside on passing plays to get more pressure inside.
In the middle I can see Fergie beating out Tank, but we shall see. I think the Rat beats out Spears at DE, and Hatcher will be in that fight as well.
I really hope that TG has something left in the tank, but I think he is done.
Austin needs to show that he can catch the ball when he needs to, and frankly I question whether he can. Hurd is a good complimnetary WR and that is all. I can see Cricket establishing himself as a good FB, especially if he picks up his blocking ability. What will by far be the most riveting situation will be Roy showing if he can improve his play; if not I can see a Watkins/Hamlin safety lineup; I think in the end it will not matter about the past or his cap hit, if Roy does not show serious improvement he is at least going to be on the bench, and at worst cut.

If only Dallas didn't play in a the division of plenty as far as good DE go, FLO wouldn't be so important. Hopefully he doesn't look take all he can.

I think Carpenter will make a push for ILB this upcoming season.

It would be nice but I doubt it. I like Burnett will take over for Akin. I would be happy with Carp getting like 2 snaps per game on defense.....at least it would be improvement.

You don't play your divisional teams that often. Only 6 out of 16, and if they make it to the playoffs.

But why settle for something less. Instead of keeping what we have and building on it, you want to get rid of some players to get others. The whole team is important.

Anyone that watched the pro bowl should agree with me that Flozell Adams looked horrible, even in a game where he doesn't need to worry as much about the pass rush he still could've been called for a dozen or so false starts. Jerry needs to be smart here and not do what he did in the 90s and overpay an aging veteran. Carp and/or Spears could be gone via trades, and how comes nobody has mentioned Stallworth in this thread? He'd be a great speed threat opposite TO, he knows he's not a #1 wr so the Cowboys wouldn't have to break the bank to sign him. Glenn is gone, no need to pay him anything this year.

Frankly if Jerry is prepared to gamble with TO & Glenn this year and go with the rest of our receiving corps, he will make a huge mistake. We really can't rely on Glenn anymore and if TO goes down neither Crayton, Hurd, Austin or Stanbach can get the job done. Why pay Romo $67M if you aren't going to give him the WRs he needs to get the job done? We gotta draft a good young WR early, hope they contribute this year just a little, but have them ready to go big time in 09. It's up to our scouting department to check out of the top young WRs re speed, hands, smarts, character, work ethic & any other tangibles which might affect their ability to perform in the NFL.

Last year we waited until the 2nd round hoping to get 1 of 2-3 WRs we wanted just to see those guys all gone 2-3 picks before us. Same thing could happen again this year unless we smart. We got a very late 2nd round pick so any of the top guys we might like (Hardy, Manningham, etc.) will be long gone. What are we going to wait for -- another 4th rounder we got to convert to a WR or another WR who might only be a #3. We haven't even drafted a WR on the first day of the draft since Alvin Harper & Michael Irvin. It's time for the Cowboys to bite the bullet and draft a good WR (if one's available) in the first round or at least the first day (first 3 rounds).

Stanback is the real wild card; just how much promise is there and how fast the Boys think he can produce will tell the tale. same with Free and McQ on the line vs the Hotel.

He does? Funny cause I could have swore I read somewhere that his cap hit, for a 1 year deal, was like 9 or 10 million. That seems like #1 money to me.

Of course I could have been misinformed on that.

I pretty much agree. Dallas needs a WR who is a deep threat and has pretty decent hands. It's one thing to have speed, but Owens has questionable hands and if you throw another WR with questionable hands into the mix, then you're looking at increasing your drops. Dallas is better of finding a WR in the draft that is a deep threat with pretty good hands and developing him themselves, instead of taking somebody Berrian or Hackett who have questionable hands and get hurt.

I'd like to see them re-sign the rest, drop Julius, find a way to sign Briggs and if possible, cut Henry and replace him with Asante Samuel or Nnamdi Asomugha. If Dallas could re-sign Reeves to a cheap 2 or 3 year deal, I'd take it. You can still move him to the #4 CB spot and draft a corner early. This would also get Reeves back on special teams coverage, something he's good at and was a weakness for Dallas last year. And if you want to cut Reeves after training camp, you could still do that.

I never understood the Burnett love. Sure, he's a nice athlete, but he's barely better in coverage than Ayodele and can't tackle to save his life. He did his best to lose the game for Dallas in the week 11 game against the G-Men. His cover skills mostly consisted of letting the running back or TE catch the ball and then hopefully they'll be so far away from the first down that anybody could just about catch him. Not to mention Ayodele is a better blitzer and better taking on blocks.

If Burnett or Carpenter could really step up their play it would be a huge boost because they have the physical skill to be good ILB's, but it's an area Dallas needs to improve upon in 2008.

Yes he does, the only reason he's got that high of a cap hit is because the Patriots weren't planning on paying him that for this upcoming season, it was a one year deal in essence.
