Well, here it is folks. The Pro Bowl is complete and the book on the 2005 season has been concluded.

Some thughts:

A year ago at this time I insisted that teh 2005 season was going to be better than the 2004 season. THAT IT WAS!

Did it go exactly as I thought? No. I thought Dallas was somehow going to be a playoff team and they didn't get there.

After last year's free agency and the draft, I was very confident Dallas was going to see the post-season.

As disappointed as I am that Dallas didn't make the postseason, I am a lot more excited over the direction this team is eventually going.

- The biggest hole a year ago was the non-existent pass rush. You have to admit, PASS RUSH IMPROVED SIGNIFICANTLY!

Is pass rush at a level where we fans are truly satisfied? No, but it was a heck of a lot better than 2004. The improvements of Dallas' pass rush begins with Demarcus Ware.

Remember this about Ware: This season he learned the outside linebacker position for the first time. Like Petitti, he learned his new position on the run. What I like about Ware is that, despite his inexperience, he became the #1 concern for opposing defensive coordinators.

Yes, Ware struggled some, but he enhanced oportunities for his teammates to make plays. Dallas had one of the better defenses in 2005 - its main reason points toward a smallish rookie defensive end from a smallish school in Troy State.

Oh, I love this kid's future.

- Another hole was the cornerback play. Terrance Newman finally played healthy and many of us are wondering why we did not see him in Hawaii.

Would you trade Newman straight up for any of the other corners in the NFL? NOT ME!

The acquisitions of Henry and Aaron Glenn was a major improvement from Lance Frazier.

Dallas' defensive acquisitions netted them a pot of gold. This is particularly true when factoring in the draftees of Ware, Spears, Burnett, Canty, and even Ratliff and Beriault.

Jason Ferguson might not have put up numbers that many fans love so much, however, please take this into consideration: Ferguson was a major focal point, a very experienced veteran, anchoring a defensive line for a team that just learned the 3-4 defense for the first time in its history. That said, I think some of you need to tone down the criticism on Ferguson. The man was a leader to such young pups like Spears, Canty, Ratliff, and T. Johnson. Ferguson was well worth the money Dallas dished out in my opinion. The true dividends of Ferguson will come to fruitation in the next couple of years.

The area I was most disappointed in was inside linebacker. Dat Nguyun just wasn't healthy and Scott Shanle made way too many tackles 5-10 yards downfield. It was good to see Bradie James establish himself and Dallas really does not know what they have in Kevin Burnett (will he be inside or outside and how effective can he become?).

Many of you are touting taking Bobby Carpenter in the first round. If he does become a Cowboy, I am really hoping you are correct about everything you say about him. I sure hope Parcells will somehow find a Harry Carson or Gary Reasons type player playing insde for the Cowboys next season.

Of course, if you have been remembering the guy I want Dallas to take in the first round, it would be Manny Lawson. Just the though of having Lawson on one side, and Ware on the other, would give the Cowboys one of the more devestating pass rushes the NFL hasn't seen in quite a while.

Remember what Tom Landry said about pass rush in 1966: "When you have a pass rush as great as ours have been, it is like having two sets of defensive backs in your backfield".

And the more I think about it, the more convinced I am that Dallas is going linebacker in the first round in April. IOW - Lawson or Carpenter.

We will address our defense in the first round probably with either Carpenter or DE/OLB Manny Lawson. If we can find a trading partner, maybe we can also trade down 2-4 places & still get either of them. I'd be happy with either but, for Ware to be effective as pass rusher, he needs OLB opposite him who opponents also fear. Lawson is a good edge rusher & plays good against the running game from DE position; he has the size/speed to convert to OLB but will be a handicap against the run like Ware was. Carpenter (haven't seend him play) seems to be tools to be really good OLB in 3-4, but hasn't shown much as a pass rusher. DON't forget in 3-4 defense our pass rush must come primarily from our LBs are we in seirous trouble. Our DL in 3-4 isn't expected put up significant sacks numbers (althou Steelers DL seems able do just that). Anyway, if we take Lawson I think we use him like Chargers used Merriman last year--as a pass rushing specialist with Fujita playing against the run. If someone has seen either of these two players in more then 1 game, please provide evaluation. Thanks.

I think that Fujita is a career backup linebacker and special teamer.

I think if Dallas gets Carpenter, then he will be brought inside as he is 6-4 and 255 pounds.

As each day passes, I am more and more convinced that the Cowboys will take a linebacker in the first round. This at the same time, will upset some of the posters on these boards as some people insist that offense has to be drafted in the first round.

I will go out on a limb here and say that I think that the Cowboys WILL NOT draft an offensive tackle on the first day. I think Parcells is intrigued with what he has in both Petitti and Colombo.

However, if there is a blue-chip linebacker out there and you think this guy can put the defense over the top, then go ahead and take him.

other than a DE/OLB Hybrid at #18 (Lawson) you don't take LB at #18. You can get LB all day everyday in round Two....

I would not be suprised by that pick and agree some will be upset. As far as I'm concern as long as Dallas address the offense it does not matter if it is in FA or the draft as long as it is addressed

I think it would make much more sense to put Carpenter at SOLB and put Burnett inside. In the 3-4 you want a big OLB, so he can go toe to toe with the OTs, but he still needs to be able to cover a TE. I really like the idea of Lawson being the pick though if he is thought to be able to handle the coverage and run duties of that SOLB spot. If they plan to platoon, I think I would prefer to platoon Singleton and Lawson instead of Fujita, unless he picks up his play in camp.

Carpenter had 8 sacks, so he does have some pass rush ability.

Why the desire to move him inside? BP complained about a lack of size at OLB all year. Why not add one that has size and the combination of skills to be successful on the strong side?

Don't draft LBers in the first? Maybe in a 4-3. If you are playing 3-4, then you're playmakers are.....LBers. Get your impact players. Outside of Ware, Dallas doesn't have any impact LBers.

Abraham, Ware, McGinest, Farrior, LT....BP doesn't seem to be opposed to taking LBers in 1.

Nors, if Dallas does take a linebacker in round two, then let it be Kai Parham.

He will have a similar advantage that Canty had last season - learning the defensive schemes in Al Groh's "Parcellsesque" system.

Don't forget we will have Khalen Thornton coming back from his knee injury. And BP and the staff was high on him. But I agree, if a blue chip LB is there at #18 such as Carpenter, I think we go with him. You can never have enough good LB's in the 3-4. Other than that it will be BPA, such as WR Holmes. I do ont think we will take an OL in round 1 or 2, unless we acquire an additional pick.

On a side note, we also will be getting Ratliif back on the DL to help, as he was coming on before his injury.
