For all the stressful posts made over the the Cowboys defense during the game, stop and think about the points this defense has given up in the first three pre-season games.

13 points to Arizona - who scored 24 and 17 points in their other two games
10 points to Seattle - who scored 34 and 23 points in their other two games
9 points to Houston - who scored 14 and 19 points in their other two games

So far, the Cowboys have held all three teams to their lowest point total in three pre-season games.

Just something to think about ...

I'll give you six for Az. That pass to Fitz was a fluke.
10 to Seattle
3 to Houston, the TD was a STs downfall not the defense.

Yhea, they are not doing to bad. I think the key so far has been generating the turnovers.

I think the concerns come from 2 areas.

1. The first team D gave up some pretty quick points in the first 2 games.

2. We are giving up some pass plays, but in todays NFL and with the rules you are going to give up some completions, especially if you are not in the QB's face.

Overall we are not doing to bad IMO.

I just want to see more pressure, particulary on 3rd down.

If Secial teams had played better we would have have shut out Houston. The field goal they got was the result of long punt return. Even then we held them to 1 yard on that possesion and made them atempt a 50 yarder.

i have had the sad chance to see the previous 2 Texan games and we really did something against them. They were able to move the ball at will against teams who had "better" Ds. Tonight opened my eyes.

Regardless of the quality of the competition's offense, giving up less than 11 points a game is impressive...

It's really surprising, but the defense seems to be coming together much more quickly than the offense... I think most of us would have figured it to work the other way 'round...

The defense didn't give up 9 points tonight.

The Texans were frothing at the mouth to see what their "fastest trio of WR's in the NFL" would look like tonight. They were completely shut down. The secondary was the story of the game tonight. Not only shut them down, but came up with two interceptions.

We've given up 2 td's in 3 games..... take away the kickoff return and we're giving up 8.6 ppg. The Texans FG was set up by a long punt return as well.. going 3 and out after the punt return.

Also some forget.....it's not just sacks..if you can get enough of a rush on the QB you destroy his rhythm causing him to rush his throws and be off target. We were in Carr's face most of the night.

Points given up, or scored for that matter, in the preseason is useless to analyze. It's not like our starting D, or O for that matter, was out there for any of those games, for the whole game.

Our starting D gave up 10 points to the Cards in a quarter and a half. That's not good.

You can't go by ppg in the preseason. All you can do is go by what you see. Our D has looked very good at times, and very bad at others. In the first two games we weren't good vs the pass, but we were vs the run. This game we weren't good vs the run, but we were good, very good, vs the pass. I want to see us put it all together in one game. Let's hope it happens vs San Diego.

Subsequently we scored 11, 18, and now 21.

A steady increase in offensive production.

Lets not forget our defense has improved every game. Things are starting to gel guys, I can't wait to get Fergy and Spears in the mix.

that is true rack..we need to make it happen together both run and pass on D..but I do think we can and have the talent/ability to do it this year unlike years past.

I look forward to having Spears and Fergi in this thing once healthy because our other guys will have had reps and let the freak-fest begin...lol

really though...our lbs still worry me..they are getting better but are running out of time...the young guys in terms of recognition..time should help this but that is my worry. Yet, I love the upside of Ware and Burnett in the core...great stuff.

IN the old days, championship teams played the "bend but don't break" and made it work...ever since the Bears and their 46 D and the Eagles with their great defenses and blitzes, everyone wants to be like them. Everyone wants a totally nasty, 3&out defense that totally shuts down the other offense.

That's just not realistic...I'll take the bend-but-don't-break philosophy anyday if it keeps the other team from having easy TD's and puts W's by our logo.

I think it depends on the offense you have. If you have an offense that can move the chains and score points, a bend but don't break defense can work just fine.

But when you don't have a high powered offense, you have to play the field position game.

To do that, you have to create turnovers, and keep your opponents pinned deep in their own territory with lots of 3 and outs.
